TL;DR

User the high safety in Cover 3 or Cover 4 (not the linebacker), flow to the ball using left stick instead of standing still, and make two coaching adjustments: Safety Depth and Width both one tick left to bring them 8 yards off. For shotgun runs, move a flat defender to the bubble side and user loop around the halfback side to stop RPOs.

Want to stop the run in College Football 26? Here's what you need to know.

Your user is the most important player on defense. Period. If you can't user properly, your run defense will be trash — doesn't matter what play you call.

The key is to flow to the ball. Don't stand there like a statue. Don't shoot gaps and get caught in traffic. User on the side you DON'T think the run is going — then flow across using the left stick.

For under center runs, call Cover 3 or Cover 4. Press Y/Triangle, then down on the right stick to shade underneath. User the high safety, not the linebacker. The safety gives you an extra defender in the run game.

For shotgun runs, watch for RPOs. Take a hard flat defender and move him to the bubble side. User on the halfback side and loop around.

Two quick coaching adjustments that help: Set Safety Depth one tick left. Set Safety Width one tick left. This brings your safeties down to about 8 yards off and tighter together.

That's it. User correctly, make these adjustments, and you'll shut down 90% of run games.

Why Is My User The Most Important Run Defender?

Your user is everything in run defense. Same play, same defense — bad user gives up a touchdown. Good user stops it for zero yards.

Here's the deal: CPU defenders do what they're programmed to do. They fill their gaps. They take their angles. But they're predictable.

Your user? You can manipulate the offensive line. You can flow to places the CPU won't go. You can be that extra defender who turns a 10-yard gain into a tackle for loss.

Ground Rules for Usering Against the Run:

  • Don't user someone on the line of scrimmage — You need to be at the second level or as a high safety
  • Don't play too timid — Standing back doing nothing is worthless
  • Don't go straight downhill — Getting stuck in traffic at the line helps nobody

The difference between good and bad usering is MASSIVE. Master this one skill and your defense transforms overnight.

How Do I Flow To The Ball As A User?

Flowing to the ball is the most important technique in run defense. Here's exactly how to do it:

  1. User on the OPPOSITE side of where you think the run is going
  2. Use the left stick to flow across to the other side
  3. Stay patient — don't just sprint straight at the line

This technique does three things:

  • You funnel the run back into your other defenders
  • You make the tackle yourself when the RB bounces
  • You manipulate the O-line, causing them to leave someone unblocked

Advanced Technique: Get close to the offensive line and loop across to make the tackle. This takes practice but it's deadly when you master it.

The key is patience. Don't panic and shoot a gap. Flow horizontally first, THEN attack downhill when you see your angle.

What Coaching Adjustments Help Against The Run?

Two simple adjustments that instantly improve your run defense:

Safety Depth:

  • Click right stick for coaching adjustments
  • Find "Safety Depth"
  • Go one tick LEFT
  • This brings safeties to about 8 yards off the line

Safety Width:

  • Find "Safety Width" in coaching adjustments
  • Go one tick LEFT
  • This pinches your safeties closer together

Why does this work? You're getting more defenders near the box without completely selling out. Your safeties can still cover deep if needed, but they're close enough to help in run support.

These adjustments work best when you're usering a linebacker or when you know a run is coming. Don't use them against pass-heavy teams — you'll get torched deep.

How Do I Stop Under Center Power Runs?

Under center runs are the hardest to stop. Here's the setup that shuts them down:

Play Call: Cover 3 or Cover 4. Doesn't matter which — just need basic stop coverage. Cover 3 Sky works perfect.

Pre-Snap Adjustment: Press Y/Triangle, then DOWN on right stick. This shades your coverage underneath.

The Secret: USER THE HIGH SAFETY, not the linebacker.

Why the safety? Watch what happens if you don't user him — he backpedals into his deep zone and becomes useless against the run. But if YOU control him, you can float down and be that extra run defender.

The linebacker will do his job whether he's CPU or user. The safety WON'T help unless you control him.

Play Action Alert: If they fake the handoff, you need to bail back to your deep coverage. Slow play it. But honestly? 99% of teams running from under center can't pass. That's WHY they're under center.

How Do I Stop RPO Bubble Screens?

RPOs are annoying but easy to stop once you know the trick.

The Setup:

  1. Call Cover 3, shade underneath
  2. Take your hard flat defender
  3. Move him to the bubble side
  4. Position him down and inside the slot receiver

You can make this adjustment before the offense even lines up. Soon as you see trips or doubles, get that defender in position.

User Positioning:

  • Make sure you're on the halfback side
  • Loop around like we talked about earlier
  • Either you come free or you open lanes for other defenders

This shuts down one of the most popular plays in the game. The bubble is covered, the run is stuffed.

Real talk — you should NOT be losing to shotgun runs. They're easier to stop than under center. If someone's beating you with shotgun runs, your usering needs work.
