TL;DR

These 10 tips fix the most common College Football 26 problems: stop backside tackles on Inside Zone by checking blocks pre-snap with Left Trigger + right stick, then untarget defenders or motion receivers to seal edges. Beat RPOs by understanding the "R" icon read key defender always plays run, letting you exploit their blocking schemes.

Want to win more games in College Football 26? Here's the deal — most people make this WAY harder than it needs to be. You don't need to be a genius. You just need to know what actually works and DO IT.

These 10 tips will help you stop getting tackled from behind, shut down RPOs, and actually get pressure on the QB. No fluff. Just real stuff that works.

How Do I Stop Getting Tackled From Behind on Inside Zone?

This happens ALL THE TIME — you're running Inside Zone and some guy crashes from the backside for the tackle. Super annoying. Here's what's happening: you don't have enough blockers for all the defenders.

Pre-Snap Check (DO THIS EVERY TIME):

  • Hold Left Trigger (L2 on PlayStation) and push right stick left
  • Look for unblocked defenders — especially on the backside
  • If you see someone free, you NEED to adjust

Fix #1: Untarget a Defender

Push up on the right stick to untarget someone. This changes your blocking scheme — might create double teams elsewhere. Experiment with which guy you untarget.

Fix #2: Motion Someone In

Motion a receiver or tight end toward the run side. Snap it as they cross the line. This seals that backside edge.

Fix #3: ID the Mic

Press Left Bumper (L1), then A (X on PlayStation). Use left stick to ID different defenders. Sometimes helps shift your blocking.

Bottom line — CHECK YOUR BLOCKS PRE-SNAP. If someone's coming free, adjust before the play, not after.

How Do I Stop RPO Plays?

RPOs are tough because the offense gets to pick between run or pass based on what you do. But here's the thing — the game has rules about how RPOs work that you can exploit.

KEY RULE: The defensive player marked with the "R" icon (read key) will NEVER play pass coverage. Even if you put him in a flat zone, he defaults to his run fit. This is huge.

Solution #1: Man Coverage on the RPO Guy

Take your slot corner or linebacker and man them up on whoever's running the RPO route. Simple. Effective. Works against flats, streaks, bubbles — whatever.

Solution #2: Hard Flat + Pass Commit

  • Put a defender (especially interior guy) in a hard flat
  • Pass commit (Right Bumper + Up on Right Stick)
  • This gets him downhill on the route fast

Solution #3: Move Your Slot Corner Inside

Align him closer to the formation. Put him in hard flat or man coverage. Destroys bubble screens.

CRITICAL: Alignment matters! Don't man up a safety who's 15 yards away on a quick flat route. He can't get there. Put your guys in position to succeed.

How Do I Stop HB Direct Snap Runs?

HB Direct Snaps are BROKEN in this game. They hit super fast and the back can cut inside or out. One of the best versions comes from Gun Tight Slot Open in the Iowa playbook.

Setup That Actually Works:

  1. Come out in Nickel (don't have a light box)
  2. Show Blitz — Right on D-pad, select "Show Blitz"
  3. Pinch D-Line — this is CRUCIAL
  4. Blitz a linebacker on the direct snap side
  5. User that side and come downhill HARD

When They're Spamming It:

Hop on a high safety and bring him into the box. Blitz both linebackers. Now you have an extra guy to stop it.

3-4 Defense Option:

From 3-4 Odd, call Cover 4 Drop. Right on D-pad, then Right Bumper. Makes it really hard for them to block everyone.

Spend 5-10 minutes in practice mode working on this. Every defense looks different — find what works for YOUR scheme.

How Do I Beat Mid Blitz?

Everyone asks this EVERY YEAR. The answer stays the same. There are a billion Mid Blitz variations, but the solutions are simple.

Method 1: Max Protect (EASIEST)

  • Call a formation with HB and TE (TE on the line)
  • Tap Left Bumper, go up on right stick — this is Max Protect
  • Your TE and HB both block
  • Yes, you only have 3 routes — but they're in MAN COVERAGE which is terrible

Run man-beating routes like Deep In routes, Slants, etc. One-on-one coverage = potential touchdown.

Method 2: Pre-Snap Adjustments (More Advanced)

  1. Show play art to check blocking
  2. Look for flame icons — these are unblocked rushers
  3. Block your halfback if you see flames
  4. If flame is over a user who probably won't blitz, untarget them (up on right stick)
  5. Call your man-beating plays

IMPORTANT: Good route combos beat good users. If two routes cut at the same spot, one user can cover both. That's a BAD play call. Spread your routes out.

How Do I Defend Quick Seams Against Trips?

EVERYBODY throws this stupid quick seam to trips. Their mom throws it. If they had a girlfriend, she'd throw it too. Super annoying — hut hut, throw immediately to that seam.

When You See Trips (3 WRs to One Side):

Option 1: User It
Sprint out there yourself and take it away. I don't do this much anymore, but it works.

Option 2: Yellow Zone + Shade Overtop

  • Take the flat zone on trips side
  • Put him in a vertical hook (yellow zone)
  • Shade overtop on that side
  • Shuts it down pretty good

Option 3: Man Coverage
Man up that seam receiver. If they catch it on perfect man coverage, tip your cap.

Make your adjustments AS SOON AS YOU BREAK THE HUDDLE. Don't wait around.

How Do I Get Pass Rush When My D-Line Won't Shed?

"I have Micah Parsons but the QB has all day!" — Yeah, because you're doing it wrong.

The Contain Problem:

Stop calling contains every play! Right Bumper + Left Bumper (R1 + L1) = contains. A contain's job is NOT to rush the passer — it's to contain the QB. They won't shed blocks aggressively.

If you have 2 contains on a 3-man rush, you only have ONE actual pass rusher. That's STUPID. Don't put Micah Parsons on a contain unless it's Lamar Jackson.

Pass Commit for Better Sheds:

  • Right Bumper (R1) + Up on Right Stick
  • Helps with disengaging and shedding
  • WARNING: If they run on pass commit, you're DONE. Broken tackles everywhere

Blitzing Rules:

  • Sending 2 = not good
  • Blitzing 5+ but no one comes free = bad blitz, stop calling it
  • When you blitz 5+, EXPECT someone free or find a new blitz

How Do I Stop QB Sneaks?

QB sneak touchdown — we've all been there. People think pinching stops it. That COULD help, but here's what actually works.

You NEED a Nose Tackle:

Someone lined up right over the center (zero technique). Without this, you're cooked.

Best Way:

  1. Switch from 62 to 53 defense
  2. Call any play (I use Line Man)
  3. Make sure you have that nose tackle

Pre-Snap Adjustments:

  • Pinch gaps: Left on D-pad, down on left stick, select "Pinch"
  • Slant inside: Left on D-pad, down on right stick, select "Slant Inside"

Get everyone as inside as possible. That nose tackle is KEY for getting the shed.

If They Surprise You:
Immediately pinch, slant inside, get your user in the gap. Not ideal but it's your best shot.

What Coaching Adjustments Help Stop Options and RPOs?

Don't sleep on coaching adjustments — they solve a LOT of problems against option teams.

How to Access: Click right stick on play call screen

Settings That Actually Matter:

  • Auto Flip Defensive Play Call: ON
  • Option Defense Read Key: CONSERVATIVE (focus on QB)
  • Pitch Key: AGGRESSIVE (focus on pitch man — forces QB to keep)
  • RPO Read Key: CONSERVATIVE (QB focus)
  • RPO Pass Key: CONSERVATIVE (don't give up the bubble)

These adjustments make a BIG difference. Set them once and forget about them.

How Do I Beat Defenses That Only Rush 1-2 Guys?

Super frustrating — they drop 9-10 guys in coverage. Everything's covered. Here's how to attack it.

1. RUN THE BALL
To get pressure with 1-2 rushers, they often pass commit. Take advantage — run it down their throat.

2. Attack Intermediate (20 Yards)
They cover deep well. They cover underneath well. The hole is around 20 yards:

  • Deep curl routes on sideline
  • Deep intermediate middle
  • Deep In routes

3. Don't Block Extra Guys
CRITICAL mistake — blocking your HB when they rush 2. You need every route runner against heavy coverage.

4. Don't Waste Routes
No bunch of streaks (unless they're giving it up). Every route needs PURPOSE. If 2 routes won't realistically get thrown, you're wasting opportunities.

How Do I Stop QB Runs From Shotgun?

QB Blast from wide formations kills people. Here's why — look at Quads Right. Your defense has that side covered, but the middle is WIDE OPEN. Of course QB Blast works.

The Fix: Show Blitz Linebackers

  • Xbox: Right on D-pad + Right Bumper
  • PlayStation: Right on D-pad + R1

This brings your linebackers into the box. Now you have numbers to stop it. MASSIVE difference.

Handling RPOs From These Formations:
Move your slot corner on top of receivers. He'll handle the bubble pretty well. Play around with it based on what they're doing.

Show blitz those linebackers and blow them up. They'll never run it again.
