How Do I Stop Spread Offenses and Wide Formations?
TL;DR: Call Nickel 3-3 Over with Cover 3 Match. Put defenders in hard flats (LB/L1 + Y/Triangle, down on right stick). Show Blitz (Right D-pad, RB/R1) to get numbers in the box. If they throw screens, use "Split the Difference" — select outside corner with B/Circle and move him inside to take away the screen lane.
Wide formations are ANNOYING. People throw bubbles, run the ball, QB blast, halfback direct snaps — it's all frustrating to defend.
Here's the setup that shuts it down:
Base Defense Against Spread
- Formation: Nickel 3-3 Over (any coverage with a slot corner works)
- Coverage: Cover 3 Match
- Adjustment: Put defenders in hard flats — Press LB/L1 + Y/Triangle, then down on right stick
The Numbers Problem
At first, they'll run all over you. You've got 5 defenders in the box against their 5 offensive linemen. When they run inside zone, unless you get a shed, it's gonna be a LONG day.
Solution: Show Blitz
- Press Right on D-pad
- Press RB/R1
- This brings your linebackers up — now you have 6 in the box vs their 5
- You get a free rusher at the QB on runs
- Your user can help even more
Stopping the Screen Game
When they adjust and start throwing screens, here's the counter:
- Your hard flat usually handles it alone
- Use "Split the Difference":
- Select outside corner with B/Circle + left stick
- Manually move him inside
- Takes away the screen passing lane
- Optional: Set coaching adjustment "Pass Key" to Conservative
Getting Aggressive
If they keep pounding the run:
- Blitz your linebackers (Right D-pad, down on right stick)
- Get the safety involved if needed
- WARNING: Being super aggressive can backfire with big plays
This setup gives you flexibility to stop EVERYTHING wide formations throw at you. You'll blow up runs and stop RPOs effectively.
What's the Best Way to Combine Route Concepts?
To become unbeatable, you need plays that attack defenses multiple ways at once. Here's how to combine two concepts into ONE play.
The Play Setup
- Formation: Gun Trips Tight End
- Play: PA Slot Corner
- Playbooks: Alabama, Minnesota (concept exists in EVERY playbook)
Adjustments:
- Put slot receiver on a slot fade
- Drag the tight end
Breaking Down the Concepts
First Concept — Flood:
- Look at the left side
- Slot fade/streak pushes defense back
- Creates high-low read with corner route and drag
- If they go high, you go low. If they go low, you go high.
Second Concept — Mesh:
- Tight end drag + outside receiver drag = double drags
- This creates a mesh concept
- Mesh beats both man AND zone
This is one free tip on combining concepts. Members get the full passing guide with 20+ more concept combinations, updated weekly. → civil.gg/become-a-member
Why This DESTROYS Defenses
You're running flood AND mesh at the same time. A flood by itself is great. Adding mesh makes it UNBEATABLE.
More adjustments you can make:
- Stem down the corner route
- Create an "over mesh" variation
- There's more than one way to run this
Key point: This principle works in ANY playbook. It's not about the specific play — it's about combining concepts.
How Do I Stop QB Scrambles?
If you've played this game AT ALL, you know this problem. They roll out, throw on the run, everything's open. They're cheesing with a fast QB. Here's the counter.
The Solution: Tom Stunts
Two ways to call this — both work:
Method 1: Pre-Play Setup
- Call a formation with 4 on the line (Nickel Over, 3-3 Mint, Double Mug)
- Hold down your coverage button (example: for Cover 4 Palms, hold Y/Triangle)
- Select: Left Tom Two Man or Right Tom Two Man
Method 2: At the Line
- Left on D-pad → Right Bumper → Select from menu
How Tom Stunts Work
Press RB + LB. This creates a twist between your D-tackles. Your defensive ends contain properly.
When they try to roll out? They CAN'T. Simple as that.
Extra adjustments:
- Pinch your D-line if you want
- Spread them out
- You get pressure up the middle AND contain
Personnel Requirements
- D-tackles need to be ATHLETIC — not just big hogs
- Defensive ends in contain need to be athletes
- If you have slow guys on the edge, it's gonna be a long day
Reality check: Sometimes contains lose contain. That's football. If they have an INSANELY athletic QB, he might outrun your contain guy.
Result: You force them to pass from the pocket with pressure. Most people are NOT good pocket passers.
How Do I Stop One-Play Deep Touchdowns?
Those deep bombs that get over the top of your coverage? Particularly against match coverage and Cover 3? Here's how to shut them down.
Solution 1: Deep Half Adjustment
When in Cover 3, convert your outside third to a deep half:
- Select your outside corner (whichever side is getting bombed)
- Double tap Y/Triangle for quick adjustments
- Push right on the right stick for deep half
- Alternative: Select with A/X, then right on right stick
Result: The DB does a MUCH better job playing the receiver. No space to throw it. Works consistently.
Solution 2: Defending Seam Streaks
When they attack the seam (like an RB seam streak for big gains):
Option A: Deep half BOTH sides
- Convert both outside thirds to deep halves
- They'll get back and help
- Still might give up the seam a little — but NOT a one-play touchdown
Option B: Use Cover 4 on that side
- You get a deep half on one side
- Inside quarter on the other
- Cover 4 defends the seam well
Cover 4 vs Cover 9
Cover 9 leaves the middle open. Could get passed inside. Cover 4 Palms is PREFERRED.
Pro tip: ALWAYS shade your Cover 4 underneath (Y/Triangle, down on right stick). You can still deep half the outside corner if needed — though Cover 4 already handles bombs well.
Combine these adjustments with good switch stick technique and zone drops. Deep ball = defended.
What's the Right Way to Tackle in College Football 26?
So many people get tackling WRONG. Here are the four tackle types you NEED to master:
1. Dive Tackle (X on Xbox / Square on PlayStation)
Makes your defender dive at the ball carrier. Use for:
- Chase down tackles from behind
- Shooting gaps and catching someone from the side
- Diving through blocks to make a tackle
- Any situation where there's NO other way to make contact
Even if you don't complete the tackle, you can trip them up. This is one of my MOST-used tackles.
2. Conservative Tackle (A on Xbox / X on PlayStation)
Best for easy, lined-up tackles:
- When you're squared up with the ball carrier
- Hawking someone down from their hip
- Head-up one-on-one situations
Pro tip: SPAM this button — it often triggers a tackle battle. Then make sure you WIN that tackle battle.
3. Hit Stick (Up on Right Stick)
For one-on-one opportunities when:
- You KNOW you're making the hit
- Late game aggressive situations
- Lower-risk (like when another defender's already there)
Benefits: Adds fatigue and wear. Can force fumbles.
WARNING: Riskier than conservative tackling. You can miss COMPLETELY.
4. Strip Attempt (RB on Xbox / R1 on PlayStation)
Spam this to rip the ball out. Use when:
- End of game — you NEED a turnover
- Pile-ups when others are making the tackle
- Coming in late when the carrier gets stood up
WARNING: Leads to broken tackles. But a fumble changes the game. You'll see your defender cock his arm back like he's going for a punch.
Quick Reference
- Dive = Chasing/catching somebody
- Conservative = Easy, lined-up tackles
- Hit Stick = Aggressive one-on-one (high risk, high reward)
- Strip = Forcing turnovers in desperate situations
What Are the Best Settings for Competitive Play?
These settings work for beginners AND competitive players playing for a billion dollars. Here's the optimal setup:
Coin Toss Settings
- First Choice: Kick — HUGE advantage getting the ball at halftime. You control more of the game. All the best players do this. (Note: I have it at receive for YouTube videos)
- Second Choice: Wind — Used to be bugged in the past
Control Settings
- Kicking: Tap and Hold — Some use tap and tap, which is fine. But tap and hold is preferred.
- Sliders: Don't mess with ANY of these (I play online)
Passing Mechanics (IMPORTANT)
Placement vs Placement and Accuracy:
- Have QB ability like Dot or Off Platform? → Use Placement (leaves accuracy to ratings/ability dice roll)
- Don't have those abilities? → Use Placement and Accuracy (puts accuracy in YOUR control)
Other passing settings:
- Passing Slowdown: Off
- Pass Lead Increase: Small — Advanced tip coming this week. If you don't use the advanced method, keep it at None. Doesn't matter much between these two if you're not using it.
- Reticle Speed: 7 — Range goes 3-12, but 7 is OPTIMAL
Defensive Settings
- Tackle Quality Text Feedback: On
- Arrow Feedback: On (shows arrow over player's head during tackles)
- Auto Flip Defensive Play Call: On (unless you're advanced running specific defenses)
- Defensive Ball Hawk: On
- Peace Seeker Assist: On at 200% (note: randomly turns off a lot)
- Switch Stick Delay: Slight — What most competitive players use. Controls time from snap to when you can start switching. NOT a delay between switches — just a brief moment after snap before switching is allowed.
- Defensive Switch Assist: Goes on and off with this, not a big deal
- Controlled Player Art: On — Shows routes and defensive assignments pre-snap
Accessibility
- Enlarge Onfield Graphics: Turn on if you struggle seeing the buttons
These are the exact settings I use. Simple, effective, no fluff.
