TL;DR

Stop getting cooked by shading underneath to kill drags, running Texas Foreman and Tom Two Man stunts, and zone dropping your curl flats to 20-25 yards. Don't click on for deep balls, guess pass when you're certain, and user the weak side safety in Cover 4 Palms. Man up problem receivers then switch your stick off them.

TL;DR: Want to stop getting cooked on defense? Here are 10 adjustments that ACTUALLY work. Shade underneath to stop drags. Use Texas Foreman and Tom Two Man stunts together. DON'T click on for deep balls. Guess Pass when you're sure. Conservative tackle most of the time. Show Blitz changes your whole look. Set your options to QB. Zone drop curl flats to 20-25 yards for corners. User the weak side safety in Cover 4 Palms. Man up problem receivers then switch stick off.

Defense is hard in College Football 26 — but you don't need to be a genius to get stops. In 218 games this January, I went 203-15 allowing 7-12 points per game. Not because I'm special. Because I use these adjustments.

Here's exactly what to do.

How Do I Stop Drag Routes That Keep Getting Open?

Everyone throws drags to the tight end. Stock coverage gets COOKED every time. But there's a mechanic most people don't know about.

The Fix:

  • Press Wire Triangle
  • Down on right stick (shade underneath)

Two things happen:

  1. Purple zones become Hard Flats (everyone knows this)
  2. Yellow zones (Hook Curls) look the SAME but play DIFFERENT

Without shade — that Hook Curl defender drops back and watches the drag go right by his face. WITH shade — he plays lower even though the zone icon doesn't change. This stops drags AND anything underneath in the middle.

Counter the Counter: Your opponent might start throwing deep crossers over the top. User those deeper routes. Or zone drop (covered later). Or just accept that stopping one thing opens another.

What Are the Best Defensive Line Stunts?

Two stunts. That's it. Texas Foreman and Tom Two Man. Use them together all game.

Texas Foreman

Manual Setup:

  1. Spread your D-Line (Left on D-pad, up on left stick)
  2. Left on D-pad → Right Bumper
  3. Left on D-pad → Right Bumper (again)

From Play Call Screen:

  1. Hold down your play icon
  2. Toggle down to "Texas Foreman"
  3. Select it, then spread your line

Gets your ends looping inside. Problem? QBs roll out to escape.

Tom Two Man (Left or Right)

Setup:

  1. Left on D-pad → Right Bumper
  2. Select "Left Tom Two Man" or "Right Tom Two Man"
  3. Spread or pinch as needed
  4. Add Contain (RB + LB / R1 + L1)

This creates a DT loop with contained ends. When they roll out — they run RIGHT into your contain. Not as much direct pressure as Texas Foreman but keeps the QB in the pocket.

Tom Two Man was my most-called stunt going 203-15.

Should I Click On When Defending Deep Balls?

NO. Do NOT click on for one-on-one deep throws. The animations are TERRIBLE. Let the CPU play it.

"Clicking On" means: Tapping B (Xbox) or Circle (PlayStation) to control that defender while the ball's in the air.

Alternative — Click On Then Click Off:

  • Tap B/Circle to take control
  • Tap again to release back to CPU
  • Helps position without committing to bad animations

Exception — When You're Beat:

  • If you're behind the receiver, click on
  • Spam X (Xbox) or Square (PlayStation) for the SWAT
  • Swatting has wider range than interceptions
  • Only go for picks (Y/Triangle) if you're SURE you're in position

Multiple Defenders: Click on to one, go for the INT. Your other defender should swat. Don't risk it on fourth down though.

When Should I Use Guess Pass?

Tap Right Bumper (R1) to see guess options. Only use Guess Pass. The others are broken.

Benefits (when right):

  • Better pass rush — faster sheds
  • Pass rushers ignore play action completely
  • Zone defenders drop immediately, no PA hesitation

Drawbacks (when wrong):

  • Run plays GASH you
  • Broken tackles everywhere
  • Terrible pursuit angles
  • Auto-broken tackles
  • Zero sheds — defense shuts down

Don't touch Guess Run Middle/Left/Right. They don't work. Guess Pass only — great if you're right, disaster if you're wrong.

Which Tackle Type Should I Use?

Stop going for hit sticks on everything. Miss a tackle = more yards, easier first downs, more TDs. Tackle EFFICIENTLY.

Conservative Tackle (A/X)

  • Most common tackle
  • Use when head-up with ball carrier
  • SPAM the button in tackle battles
  • Easy, reliable, downhill tackles

Dive Tackle (X/Square)

  • Chasing from behind
  • Coming from the side
  • Need to close distance on angle

Hit Stick (Right Stick Up)

  • ONLY with clear lane
  • Understand the risk
  • NEVER in open field
  • Be selective

Strip (RB/R1)

  • Gang tackle situations only
  • Come in late on existing tackle
  • NEVER one-on-one head-up

Cut Stick (Right Stick Down) — not relevant in this game. Skip it.

How Does Show Blitz Change My Defense?

Show Blitz completely changes your pre-snap look. Every formation has different Show Blitz alignment.

Full Show Blitz:

  • Tap RB (R1) twice
  • Brings safeties down significantly
  • All linebackers in the box
  • Totally different defensive look

Linebacker-Only Show Blitz:

  • Right on D-pad → RB (R1)
  • Only linebackers come down, safeties stay back
  • PERFECT against spread formations that run
  • Eliminates numbers disadvantage in the box
  • Consider bringing slot corner in for RPOs

When to Use:

  • Different blitz looks
  • Varied coverage looks
  • Better run defense
  • Short yardage
  • Some people base entire schemes on constant Show Blitz

How Do I Stop Read Options?

Read options give free yards if you don't adjust. Here's the fix:

  1. Click right stick on defense
  2. Go to Coaching Adjustments
  3. Navigate to Option Defense

Settings:

  • Option Defense: Conservative (NOT Aggressive)
  • Pass Key on RPOs: QB
  • Read Options: QB

Conservative plays the QB. Aggressive plays pitch man. You want the QB.

Key Principle: Do NOT let the QB keep it. That's where big plays happen. Force the handoff to the RB. 95% of read option players want to keep with QB — take it away.

How Do I Stop Corner Routes and Crossers?

Everyone spams corners. After one or two, you KNOW it's coming. Zone drops fix this.

Setup:

  1. Click right stick → Coaching Adjustments
  2. Go to Zone Drops
  3. Set Curl Flats to 20-25 yards (start at 20, adjust from there)

In-Game:

  1. Call any zone (Tampa 2 works)
  2. Find the side with 3 receivers/threats (where corners usually go)
  3. Select a Yellow zone defender on that side
  4. Press A (Xbox) or X (PlayStation)
  5. Right on left stick → Curl Flat

That defender drops DEEP. Takes away corners AND crossers to that side. Both routes attack that same deep area — one adjustment stops both.

Basic zone adjustment. No usering needed. If they keep attacking an area — drop a zone there.

How Do I User in Cover 4 Palms?

Cover 4 Palms is match coverage. Looks like zone but defenders man up based on routes.

Easy Rule: User the WEAK side safety. If they have trips right — user the LEFT safety.

What to Watch:

  • Anything crossing the field
  • Work back over middle
  • Help against run

This safety's a rover in match coverage anyway. Hop on him, lurk middle, play underneath, attack the run.

Quick Fix for Bombs: Put the STRONG side safety in Inside Third or Deep Half. Most bombs in match coverage come to the trips side.

How Do I Stop One Receiver From Cooking Me?

Your opponent keeps hitting #5 on crossers. Nothing works. Here's the advanced fix.

Switch Stick Man Coverage:

  1. User any defender
  2. Press A (Xbox) or X (PlayStation)
  3. Up on right stick for man coverage
  4. Select the problem receiver (#5)

At the Snap:

  • Watch #5 start his route
  • Once you confirm it's the crosser — switch stick OFF
  • CPU locks him in tight man while you're free to do something else

Why This Works Better: Regular man coverage sometimes overcommits. By usering first, you keep flexibility. If he's NOT running the problem route — don't waste the assignment. If he IS — user briefly then switch off.

Best From: Cover 2, Cover 3, Cover 4. Works from any defense but zones preferred.

Most advanced defensive tactic in the game. Man up the danger, user at snap, switch stick off. Let CPU handle him while you handle everything else.
