Quick Recap:

Dominate with halfback speed in routes from Gun Tray Open and Gun Split Y Flex formations that beat all coverage except hard flats. Pair them with custom stemmed curl routes (L1 + Up on D-pad) to attack multiple levels simultaneously. Master off platform ability and blocking adjustments to turn broken plays into guaranteed touchdowns.

TL;DR: Want to score more touchdowns in College Football 26? Use these 19 tips that nobody talks about. Halfback speed in routes that beat any coverage, custom stemmed curl routes that destroy zones, and blocking adjustments that shut down elite pass rushers. Plus the ONE ability (off platform) that turns broken plays into touchdowns.

What's the best route in College Football 26 that nobody uses?

The halfback speed in route. This isn't your normal in route. It comes stock on certain plays and beats EVERYTHING except hard flats.

Regular in routes suck. Your halfback bumps the offensive line, gets caught up, takes forever to develop. Yeah, he might get open eventually. But it's trash compared to the speed in.

The speed in only comes on certain plays. You can't hot route it. You need to call a stock play that already has it.

Where to find halfback speed in routes

  • Gun Tray Open, Wide Drag (Tulsa playbook)
  • Gun Split Y Flex, has TWO speed in routes
  • Check civil.gg/playbooks for your team's specific plays with speed routes

This route consistently beats man, zone, and match coverage. The only counter is a hard flat. And if they're running that, you hit something else.

How do you pair routes together for easy completions?

Take two elite routes and make them work together. Start with your halfback speed in or speed out. Already dominant by itself.

Now add a custom stemmed curl route:

  1. Put a curl on your outside wide receiver
  2. Custom stem him up. Y/Triangle to select
  3. Hold Left Bumper/L1
  4. Press Up on D-pad once

Now you've got:

  • Speed route attacking underneath
  • Curl route attacking overtop
  • Defense can't stop both

Formation for this combo

Gun Trips TE Offset Weak. Verticals play (Tulsa playbook). But you can recreate this from tons of formations.

I went live in head-to-head with Tulsa vs Indiana and ONLY called this play for an entire drive. Moved down the field easy, scored with a motion halfback swing screen.

What plays work best inside the 5 yard line?

Your offense MUST change inside the 5. If you're running the same stuff as midfield, you're doing it wrong.

Best play types inside the 5:

  • Halfback direct snaps, downhill power
  • QB blasts
  • Motion swing screens
  • Specific gadget plays

How to find red zone plays in your playbook

  1. Go to civil.gg/playbooks
  2. Click your team
  3. Use the playfinder
  4. Search "halfback direct" or "swing screen"

Example: Auburn has halfback direct in Gun Trio Four Wide. The Motion RPO Peak Swing is money inside the 5. That swing screen beats most red zone defenses.

How do you stop elite defensive linemen with Inside Stuff?

Platinum Grip Breaker + Gold Inside Stuff = your run game is dead. These guys shed blocks instantly on one-on-ones.

Two ways to counter:

Method 1: Force a double team

  1. Hold Left Trigger/L2
  2. Press Left on Right Stick to see blocking
  3. Open pass protection menu
  4. Double team the problem defender

Sometimes the game registers a double team even when it's not perfect. Not super consistent but helps.

Method 2: Find natural double teams (BETTER)

Call different run plays until you find one with a NATURAL double team on that defender.

Example: Inside Zone from Gun Spread Offset often has natural double teams built in.

Interior disruptors are INSANE one-on-one. They're average with double teams.

What's ID the Mike and why does it stop gap shoots?

When defenders shoot gaps with their user, they come totally free. ID the Mike shuts this down.

How to ID the Mike:

  1. Press Left Bumper/L1
  2. Tap A/X to ID the Mike
  3. Select the user defender shooting gaps

Important: Some plays have a stock ID. You need to RE-ID on the actual user. The default ID is wrong.

Watch what happens. That user can't shoot the gap anymore. Your center or guard picks them up every time. ID the Mike is THE counter to gap shoots.

How do you run custom stemmed tight end routes?

This route beats man, zone, AND match coverage. I was 203-15 online but struggling on offense until I added this.

Setup:

  1. Put your tight end on an in route
  2. Y/Triangle to select him
  3. Hold Left Bumper/L1
  4. Press Up on D-pad three times

The tight end needs to be on the line of scrimmage. He'll break open deep downfield while your underneath routes occupy the defense.

Works from any formation with a tight end on the line. Attack vertically around it for best results.

Why are deep in routes unstoppable in the red zone?

Defenses don't guard the back of the end zone well. Custom stemmed in routes FEAST here.

Setup inside the 10:

  1. In route on inside receiver or tight end
  2. Y/Triangle to select
  3. Hold Left Bumper/L1
  4. Spam Up on D-pad until he's at the back of the end zone

DO NOT spam this route. It's your LAST read, not your first.

Read progression:

  1. Quick drag underneath
  2. Halfback streak
  3. Other quick routes
  4. THEN the deep in if everything's covered

The deep in takes time to develop. Hit your early stuff first. But when they sell out underneath, that back corner is WIDE OPEN.

What's auto base protection and why should it be set to empty?

Every play comes with stock protection. Usually a half slide. This lets random pressure through.

Do this EVERY game:

  1. At play call screen, click Right Stick
  2. Scroll to Auto Base Protection
  3. Set to Empty

Empty protection = best against stunts. Base protection gets stunted on. Empty doesn't.

If you see edge pressure with empty protection, just block your halfback. Changes to base protection and picks up that edge.

How does route spacing create automatic completions?

Good spacing turns covered routes into automatic completions.

Example with halfback speed in:

  • Without spacing: Gets covered by hard flat quickly
  • With spacing: Put outside receiver on a flat route. Pushes hard flat to sideline, speed in stays open forever

This works for ANY route:

  • Slants need an out route pushing coverage outside
  • Crossers need streaks pushing coverage deep
  • Always think. What route helps my main route get open?

Route combos aren't random. Every route should help another route.

Why does route timing matter more than the route itself?

Different routes can be thrown at different times. Missing this = missing HUGE plays.

Wheel route timing:

  • Immediate: Quick throw vs heavy blitz
  • Late: Deep shot behind a clear-out route

Slant timing:

  • Middle of field: Traditional slant window
  • Late over middle: When coverage rolls over

Streak timing:

  • Instant: Boom-boom timing vs off coverage
  • Deep: Over the top vs Cover 2

One route attacking multiple areas = POWERFUL offense.

How do you avoid throwing interceptions with highball?

Best players use this one trick. It's cheesy but it WORKS.

Highball = Left Bumper/L1 while throwing

When to highball:

  • Tight coverage
  • Contested throws
  • End zone fades
  • ANY TIME defenders are near your receiver

Defense takes a HUGE catch rating hit on high balls. Can you still throw picks? Yeah. But way less often.

When NOT to highball:

  • Wide open receivers
  • Clean throwing lanes
  • Short routes with space

You can overthrow with highball. Don't spam it. Use it smart in tight windows.

How do formation subs and audibles expand your offense?

You're limiting yourself if you don't set this up pre-game.

Example setup:

  1. Go to I-Formation Wing
  2. Press Right Stick for packages
  3. Select Gadget at HB package
  4. This puts a WR at halfback position

Now you can audible to 3WR formations like Gun Ace Slot or Gun Trips from a 2WR formation.

Setting audibles:

  1. Enter formation
  2. Tap Left Trigger/L2
  3. Set your four audibles

Your "fullback" becomes your halfback. Your "halfback" (who's actually a WR) goes out wide. Opens up your entire audible game.

What protection adjustments can you make with the right stick?

Can't protect your QB? There's an easy fix most players don't know.

From empty protection:

  • Right Stick RIGHT = Half slide right
  • Right Stick LEFT = Half slide left
  • Double flick = Full slide (leaves backside unblocked)

Half slides > Full slides

Untargeting defenders:

  1. Press Up on Right Stick FIRST
  2. Then untarget specific defender
  3. Must do before any other protection adjustment

Why blocking the correct amount matters for money plays?

Stop blocking on autopilot. Your halfback is a VARIABLE, not a constant.

Example with Drive Post from Gun Trips TE:

  • Stock setup: Block halfback
  • vs 3-man rush: Put HB on a route instead
  • vs Heavy blitz: Block HB AND tight end

Think about it. Five eligible receivers every play. If you block one against a 3-man rush, you're down to four for no reason.

Always ask:

  • How many are they rushing?
  • Do I need this blocker?
  • What's their blitz tendency?

Block based on what defense shows, not what YouTube tells you.

What's the easiest screen play in College Football 26?

The halfback angle screen. Perfect for online and dynasty. Easy yardage with ZERO hot routes.

Where to find them:

  • Gun Trips HB Weak. Motion HB Angle Screen
  • Wide Trips HB Weak formations

WARNING: Works amazing the first time. Defense adjusts after that. Use it once per game, maybe twice if you space them out.

Best spots to use:

  • Open field for chunk plays
  • Inside the 15 yard line for easy TDs

How do halfback slide routes beat man coverage?

More consistent than screens. The halfback slide route.

Find it in Gun Trips X Nasty. Hy Low Cross play (Charlotte playbook and others).

The slide route:

  • Gets outside vs man coverage
  • Sits underneath zones
  • Only stopped by hard flats

Pro tip: Check if your HB is tired (panting animation). Fresh legs = better slides.

Pairs PERFECT with custom stemmed curl routes. Read underneath slide first, then curl overtop. Always hitting spaces.

What's the worst decision that loses games?

That ONE panic throw when you're under pressure. You feel weird pressure, something looks off, and you just mash a button.

THROW IT AWAY.

  • Click Right Stick to throw away
  • Hold Both Triggers + Right Stick to give up/slide

When to throw away:

  • First read looks weird
  • Pressure in your face
  • Rolling out with nothing open
  • ANY TIME you're confused

Be willing to have mediocre plays. An incompletion beats an interception every time. One pick per drive ruins everything.

How do you spike the ball to stop the clock?

End of half, big play, no timeouts left. Need to spike.

After the play:

  1. Hold X/Square (turbo to line)
  2. Press RB/R1 to spike
  3. Can spam A/X to get lined up faster

DO NOT use fake spike. It's trash.

Most people don't know this mechanic. Practice it so you don't forget in clutch moments.

Why is Off Platform the best QB ability in the game?

Almost every QB in MUT has it. At gold or higher, it's BROKEN.

Off Platform = Significant accuracy boost throwing across body up to 30 yards downfield.

When to use:

  • Rolling out under pressure
  • Countering A-gap blitzes
  • Bailout situations

Just hold turbo while rolling out. You'll hit INSANE throws. Cross-body lasers that should be picks become dimes.

Don't make this your whole offense. But having it as a counter when they blitz up the middle? Game changer.

Even works on deep crossers 30 yards downfield. Roll right, throw left, perfect accuracy. Opens up your entire offense.
