How to ID the MIKE Linebacker
Your run game getting blown up by gap shooters? They're coming free every time you hand it off?
ID the MIKE linebacker.
This one adjustment stops gap shoots cold. Takes two seconds. Changes everything.
Here's the deal. Defenses love shooting gaps with their user. They pick a linebacker or safety. Wait for the snap. Shoot straight through your line. Easy tackle for loss.
But there's a counter. And it's stupid simple.
Left Bumper + A button (or X on PlayStation). That's it. Target their user defender. Now your center knows exactly who to block.
The game's default MIKE ID? Wrong most of the time. You gotta do it yourself. Every play.
What Is MIKE ID
MIKE identification tells your offensive line WHO to block. Specifically your center.
Think of it like this. Your center is the quarterback of your O-line. He makes the calls. Sets the protection. But he needs to know where the threat is coming from.
When you ID the MIKE, you're pointing at a defender and saying "THIS GUY is the problem. Block him."
The center adjusts. Sometimes he blocks the MIKE himself. Sometimes he calls for help. Sometimes he slides protection that direction.
Point is. Now your line has a plan.
When to Use MIKE ID
Every single run play. Period.
But ESPECIALLY when you see:
- User defenders creeping up: Guy moving around pre-snap? That's your MIKE
- Linebackers showing blitz: Standing at the line? ID him
- Safeties in the box, Extra defender near the line of scrimmage
- Obvious gap shoot setups, Defender lined up in a gap, not over a blocker
Here's the thing though. Even if you don't see an obvious threat, ID somebody anyway. The default MIKE selection is usually garbage.
Pick the most dangerous looking defender. The one closest to where your run is going. The user if you can spot him.
Why MIKE ID Works Against Gap Shoots
Gap shooters rely on confusion. They want to hit a gap that's unblocked.
Your center has blocking rules. But those rules depend on identifying threats correctly. If the center thinks the MIKE is some random linebacker in coverage, he might slide protection the wrong way.
Meanwhile, the real threat, that user safety shooting the A gap, comes totally free.
But when you ID the right guy?
Now the center knows. "Oh, THAT'S who we're worried about." He adjusts. Maybe he blocks him directly. Maybe he calls for the guard to help. Maybe he slides the whole line that direction.
Either way. No more free rushers.
How to Execute MIKE ID
Dead simple:
- Get to the line of scrimmage
- Hold Left Bumper (LB) on Xbox or L1 on PlayStation
- Tap A button (Xbox) or X button (PlayStation)
- Move your cursor over the defender you want to ID
- Tap A or X again to confirm
You'll see a little indicator appear over that defender. That's your MIKE.
Important: Some plays already have a MIKE identified when you get to the line. Don't trust it. Re-ID him yourself. The computer usually picks wrong.
Takes maybe 2-3 seconds total. Do it every play.
Who to ID as the MIKE
Priority list:
- The user defender: If you can figure out who they're controlling, that's your guy
- Closest linebacker to your run direction - Running right? ID the ROLB or MIKE
- Safeties in the box, Extra defenders near the line are always dangerous
- Anyone showing obvious blitz, Creeping up pre-snap? That's a threat
When in doubt, pick the defender who looks most dangerous. The one closest to where you think trouble is coming from.
What Happens After You ID
Your blocking changes. Immediately.
The center becomes aware of that specific threat. He might:
- Block the MIKE directly
- Call for double team help
- Slide protection toward the MIKE
- Leave the MIKE for a back to pick up
You don't control which one happens. The game decides based on the play call and formation. But now the computer knows who the real threat is.
Result? Gap shoots get picked up. Free rushers disappear. Your running game actually works.
Common MIKE ID Mistakes
Trusting the default ID - Don't. Ever. Always re-ID yourself.
IDing edge rushers. Your tackles should handle edge guys anyway. ID inside threats.
Forgetting to do it. Make it a habit. Every run play. No exceptions.
IDing the wrong level. Don't ID defensive linemen. They're getting blocked anyway. Focus on linebackers and safeties.
Overthinking it. When in doubt, just pick somebody. Better to ID the wrong guy than nobody at all.
When MIKE ID Doesn't Help
MIKE ID fixes gap shoots and inside pressure. But it won't solve everything.
Won't help against:
- Edge rushers beating your tackles
- Defensive line stunts and twists
- All-out blitzes with more rushers than blockers
- Defenders making great individual plays
But for gap shoots specifically? This is your answer.
Start doing this every play. Watch how much harder it becomes for defenses to get free rushers up the middle. Your running game will thank you.
