15 Settings You NEED To Change | College Football 26

CFB 26passingplaybook tipsdefensegeneraluser defenseaccessibilityrun gamecoverageoffense

TL;DR

Change these 15 settings immediately: Enable "Enlarge On-Field Graphics" in Accessibility to make player icons massive and easier to see. Set your "Option Read Key" and "RPO Read Key" to Conservative every game so your defender locks onto the QB instead of getting burned by read options. These settings are OFF by default but separate good players from bad ones.

Want to win more games? Change these 15 settings RIGHT NOW. Most players don't even know these exist — but they make a MASSIVE difference between winning and losing.

I tested every single setting in College Football 26 to find the ones that actually matter. These aren't just random preferences. These are the settings that top players use to dominate online.

Let's start with the most important ones that'll help you win TODAY.

How Do I Make Player Icons Bigger So I Can Actually See Them?

This setting is a game-changer if you struggle to see player icons on the field. Most people don't even know it exists.

How to enable:

  • Go into Options
  • Go into Settings
  • Toggle over to Accessibility
  • Scroll down to "Enlarge On-Field Graphics"
  • Toggle this ON

The icons become MASSIVE. When you drop back to pass, you'll see huge player indicators that are impossible to miss. Even the passing meter itself gets bigger.

This setting comes OFF by default — which is why nobody knows about it.

How Do I Stop Getting Burned by Read Options Every Single Game?

One of my biggest pet peeves is giving up massive plays on read options where the QB keeps it. Here's how to shut it down:

Change these settings at the start of EVERY game:

  • Click the right stick in on defense
  • Scroll down to "Option Read Key"
  • Change this to Conservative
  • Also change "RPO Read Key" to Conservative

This makes your option defender focus on the quarterback EVERY TIME. Yes, you'll give up the handoff — but that goes into the teeth of your defense where you have help.

Watch for the R icon on your defender. Once he's on Conservative, he's playing the QB no matter what. This totally denies one of the biggest gimmick plays people try in crucial situations.

Why Does My Defense Keep Lining Up on the Wrong Side?

Auto Flip Defensive Play Call fixes this instantly. So many people get this wrong or don't know how it works.

Set it once and forget it:

  1. Pause and go into Options (you can do this in the main menu)
  2. Scroll down to Gameplay Helpers
  3. Set "Auto Flip Defensive Play Call" to ON

This matches the strength of your defense with the strength of their offense automatically.

Example: If they come out in Y-Off Trips with the strength to the right, your slot corner will automatically flip to that side. Your linebackers shift over too.

You NEVER want the strength of your defense opposite the strength of the offense. That makes literally no sense.

How Do I See My Coverage Assignment When Playing User Defense?

This setting shows you EXACTLY what your assignment is when usering a defender. I turned this on years ago and love it.

You can't change this in-game. Here's how:

  1. Go to the main menu
  2. Go into Game Settings
  3. From Game Options, scroll down
  4. Find "Controlled Player Art"
  5. Set to ON

Now you'll see your defensive assignment highlighted on the field. It's a nice little add-on that helps make sure you're doing the right thing as a user defender.

What's the Best Way to Set Up My Depth Chart for Different Formations? (Dynasty Mode)

Formation Subs is one of the coolest features for Dynasty players. You can preset which players go where in EVERY formation.

How to set it up:

  • Press right bumper (R1 on PlayStation)
  • Tab over to "Team"
  • Go into "Formation Subs"
  • Select any formation to edit

Example setups:

Short Yardage Package (Gun Normal Y-Off Close):

  • Toggle to halfback position
  • Sub in your power back instead of your speed back
  • He'll automatically be in for short yardage situations

Speed in the Slot (Gun Wing Trips):

  • Toggle to slot receiver
  • Sub in your fastest receiver
  • Take advantage of their speed on specific plays

This saves you from making subs before each game. Set your game plan once and it's ready all week.

How Do I Fix My Switch Stick So It Actually Works?

Switch Stick lets you change defenders by flicking the right stick during pass coverage. But the settings matter A LOT.

Switch Stick Delay - Set to SLIGHT

You have two options:

  • Slight (recommended) — Small delay after snap before you can switch
  • None (acceptable) — Can switch immediately

Never use:

  • Moderate — Too much delay
  • Disabled — You'll hit stick instead of switching (terrible idea)

The slight delay prevents accidental switches when making pre-snap adjustments with the right stick.

Also turn on Defensive Switch Assist. This keeps your previous defender in their coverage area instead of free-roaming when you switch off them.

How Do I Stop Getting Destroyed by Speed Option Pitches?

The defensive AI struggles with pitch plays. Here's how to shut them down:

Every game, make this adjustment:

  • Click right stick on defense
  • Go to "Option Pitch Key"
  • Set to "Focus on the Pitch Option"

Yes, this gives up the QB keeper. But that's what we WANT.

Why this works:

  1. Most players struggle with the pitch read and pitch it anyway
  2. QB keepers lead to wear and tear on their quarterback
  3. There are fewer big plays on QB keepers vs pitches
  4. If they want to go 3 yards at a time with their QB, good luck scoring 21 points

You need to score 21 points to win games. Let them take hits with their QB all day.

Which Passing Type Should I Use — Placement or Placement Accuracy?

All the best players use either Placement or Placement Accuracy. Here's the difference:

Placement Accuracy: YOU control both ball placement AND accuracy

Placement: YOU control placement, the game controls accuracy

Which one to pick:

  • If your QB has accuracy abilities like "Dot" or "Off Platform" → Use Placement
  • If your QB has no accuracy abilities → Use Placement Accuracy

Why? Abilities don't activate when YOU'RE controlling accuracy. Let the game handle it so your QB's abilities actually work.

Why not Classic or Revamp?

  • Classic — Can't see where you're throwing until ball is in the air
  • Revamp — Too many unnecessary trajectory options

With Placement, you can SEE the reticle move before you throw. You know exactly where the ball is going.

Pro tip: Hold Left Bumper (L1) for high balls. When throwing high, use Triangle/Y to aggressive catch.

What Are the Best Settings for Passing Accuracy and Visibility?

These settings assume you're using Placement or Placement Accuracy.

Quick settings to change:

  • Passing Slowdown: OFF (only for CPU play anyway)
  • Pass Lead Increase: NONE (even pros keep this at none)
  • Reticle Speed: 7 (default — some pros use 3, find your preference)
  • Reticle Visibility: USER ONLY
  • Meter Visibility: USER ONLY

Never turn off visibility settings. You need to see what you're doing.

Should I Keep Defensive Ball Hawk and Heat Seeker On?

YES. Keep these gameplay helpers ON:

Defensive Ball Hawk: ON
Helps defenders attack the ball aggressively for interceptions. The game literally warns you that turning it off makes defenders less aggressive.

Defensive Heat Seeker Assist: ON
Heat Seeker Window Size: 200%
I believe this helps line up tackles. Can't prove it with data, but it feels better. Trust me on this one.

Defensive Switch Assist: ON
Keeps defenders in their zones when you switch off them.

Note: These settings randomly reset sometimes. Always double-check them.

Why Should I Turn Controller Vibration On for Field Goals?

Most people turn vibration off. That's a mistake for field goals.

How vibration helps:

  • Push stick right with no vibration = accurate kick
  • Push stick left with vibration = you're outside the accuracy zone
  • The controller literally tells you when you're off target

It's hard to tell accuracy just by looking at the screen. Vibration gives you instant feedback.

Set controller vibration to "Assist" and become a better kicker.

What's the Best Field Goal Kicking Technique?

Use these settings with vibration on for best results:

Setup:

  • Go to Settings
  • Find "Kicking Control Scheme"
  • Select "Tap and Hold" (should be default)

Kicking technique:

  1. Accuracy Bar: Line it up dead center and hold
  2. Power Meter: Let go RIGHT BEFORE it fills completely

WARNING: If you hold the meter all the way full, you get an accuracy penalty. Stop just before the top.

Practice this and you'll win games you'd otherwise lose from missed kicks.

How Do I Set Custom Audibles That Actually Save?

IMPORTANT: Set audibles in-game, NOT practice mode. Practice mode bugs out.

How to set custom audibles:

  1. Get to your formation in-game
  2. Press Left Trigger (LT/L2) to view audibles
  3. Select a play you never use
  4. Replace it with a play you actually call

Example (Oregon State Playbook):

  • Formation: Trips TE Offset Weak
  • Remove: "Flood Divide" (never used)
  • Add: "Verticals" (used constantly)

Using audibles on the field:

  1. Break huddle, get to the line
  2. Tap X (Xbox) or Square (PlayStation)
  3. D-pad to your new play

Tips:

  • Don't make changes with less than 6 seconds on play clock (false start)
  • First time setting? Call timeout or take delay of game to save them
  • Once set, they save forever in that playbook

Should I Play on Wired or Wireless Connection?

This might be the MOST IMPORTANT tip. Get off wireless RIGHT NOW.

How to check:

  • Hit Xbox/PlayStation button
  • Go to Settings
  • Check Network settings
  • Make sure you're WIRED

The difference between wireless and wired is MASSIVE. Being wired eliminates input delay.

This is literally the difference between throwing a touchdown vs an interception — based on nothing but your connection.

So many people complain about delay while playing wireless. Once they switch to wired, the game becomes fun again. Hook up that ethernet cable TODAY.

What Offensive Coaching Adjustments Should I Change Mid-Game?

Most offensive adjustments stay on Balanced. But here's when to change them:

Ball Carrier Setting:

  • Conservative — Use when protecting a lead, milking clock, or can't afford a fumble
  • Aggressive — Use on goal line or 4th and 1 for extra yards (higher fumble risk)

Tempo Adjustment:

  • Normal — Back to huddle
  • No Huddle — Hurry up offense
  • Turbo — Fastest to line but can't audible (avoid this)
  • Chew Clock — End of game/half situations

Settings to NEVER touch:

  • Deep pass catching
  • Intermediate pass catching
  • Blocking (aggressive = more holding penalties)

We click on to receivers anyway, so pass catching settings don't matter.

Quick Reference: All 15 Settings You Need to Change

  1. Enlarge On-Field Graphics: ON (Accessibility menu)
  2. Option Read Key: Conservative (in-game adjustment)
  3. RPO Read Key: Conservative (in-game adjustment)
  4. Auto Flip Defensive Play Call: ON (Gameplay Helpers)
  5. Controlled Player Art: ON (main menu only)
  6. Switch Stick Delay: SLIGHT
  7. Defensive Switch Assist: ON
  8. Option Pitch Key: Focus on Pitch Option
  9. Passing Type: Placement or Placement Accuracy
  10. Defensive Ball Hawk: ON
  11. Heat Seeker Assist: ON (Window Size: 200%)
  12. Controller Vibration: ASSIST
  13. Kicking Control: Tap and Hold
  14. Network Connection: WIRED (not wireless)
  15. Formation Subs: Set for your playbook

Change these settings and watch your win rate go up immediately. These aren't preferences — they're what the best players use to dominate.
