The Only Defensive Plays You Need In College Football 26!

CFB 26CoverageBlitzPassingRun GameGeneralUser DefenseDefense

Quick Recap:

You only need seven defensive strategies to dominate College Football 26: Goal Line 53 with pinch/slant adjustments stuffs short yardage, never use Cover 0 on long downs. Use zone coverage with drops set to the sticks instead. Always stunt your D-line with Pirate 3-Man, run Cover 3 Cloud for weak side protection, and use Tampa 2 with zone adjustments in the red zone.

TL;DR: You only need seven defensive strategies to shut down opponents in College Football 26. Goal Line 53 with pinch/slant adjustments stops short yardage. Never use Cover 0 on 3rd/4th and long. Use zone with drops set to the markers. Always stunt your D-line (Pirate 3-Man is best). Cover 3 Cloud protects the weak side seam. Tampa 2 with adjusted zones dominates red zone. Two-man rush confuses pass-heavy players. Keep it simple. Know your assignments.

How Do I Stop QB Sneaks on the Goal Line?

We're on the goal line. Ball's past the one-yard line. When they try to run a QB sneak, we're going to blow them up in the backfield.

They need ONE INCH for a touchdown and they're getting NOTHING.

The Setup

Formation: Goal Line 53 (in every playbook)

I prefer Goal Line Man but any play works

Adjustments:

  1. Left on D-pad + Down on left stick = Pinch defensive line
  2. Left on D-pad + Down on right stick = Slant inside

Your defense looks completely different after these adjustments.

Your job: Flow to help if they call a toss or power. You don't have responsibility in the middle.

What happens:

  • QB sneak? Blown up
  • Power O? Also gets blown up
  • Everything gets stuffed

Just like that. Goal line stand.

What Defense Should I Call on 3rd and Long?

Fourth and 23, yet somehow they find somebody open for a first down. This stinks to give up.

First, let me tell you what we CAN'T do. Go Cover Zero. All Cover Zero does is beg them to throw something wide open underneath for a billion yards after the catch. When I do film reviews, that's all I see people try. No, no, no.

The Four-Step System

Step 1: Guess Pass
Tap Right Bumper + Up on the Right Stick. Gets your defensive line better sheds. Puts the quarterback on a natural timer.

Step 2: Get Into Basic Zone Defense
Right stick, click in. Then go into coaching adjustments.

Step 3: Adjust Your Zone Drops
Scroll down to zone drop flats. Let's say it's fourth and 23:

  • Flats to 25
  • Hooks to 25

Why? When they try to throw a deep curl or deep out flat, they're catching it underneath us.

Step 4: Call Tampa Two OR Cover Three
Ideally in a Cover Two shell. I like to shade underneath to get my flats into hard flats.

User Defending the Seam

Most people snap the ball and throw the seam fast. Quick first down.

The way we're ready:

  • When ball snaps, run right to where the seam would be
  • Seam can't be thrown
  • Play the marker with your user
  • Do NOT run past that first down marker

The Simple Rules

  • Guess pass
  • Zone drops to the markers
  • Protect the seam
  • Run basic zone coverage
  • Do NOT run match
  • Do NOT run Cover Zero
  • Don't try blitzing

The best third and fourth and long defenses come from Dime Normal. Best pressure and coverage in the game.

Should I Always Rush Four on Defense?

Here's the fact: You should never be doing a standard four-man rush on defense.

Every time we're rushing the passer, our defensive line should be either:

  • Stunting
  • Sending some kind of blitz
  • Containing

Ideally, it's at least two of those things.

Standard four-man rush? They're just doing basic moves. You can get sheds, sacks, stop the run a little bit. But you're not putting the quarterback under any pressure.

We always want the quarterback to be scared.

The Pirate Three-Man Stunt

My new favorite. The Pirate Three-Man.

How to set it up:

  1. Go left on the D-pad
  2. Tap right bumper or R1 to open stunt screen
  3. Use D-pad to find Right Pirate Three-Man or Left Pirate Three-Man
  4. Contain. Right bumper, left bumper
  5. Pinch your defensive line (better for run defense)

You can also select this at play call screen by holding down the play icon.

Backup Option: Two Tom T-Man

If Pirate Man isn't working, go Two Tom T-Man:

  • Pinch defensive line
  • Contain
  • Get a little twist in the middle

This doesn't guarantee better pass rush always. What it DOES guarantee. We're not stuck in standard four-man rush.

Gives us high likelihood of quick pressure. If we don't get it, we don't lose anything. If it works, we get awesome pressure, collapsing the pocket.

As you get better defensive linemen, especially guys with Quick Jump, this becomes lethal.

What's the Best Coverage Nobody Uses?

Cover 3 Cloud, a hybrid coverage that covers way more field than people realize. Every playbook has this. Nearly every formation.

Go into Nickel 24. Scroll down. Find Cover 3 Cloud on the right side.

You can go into concepts, go to Cover 3, scroll around. Cover 3 Cloud on the left, Cover 3 Cloud in the middle. It's everywhere.

Why Cover 3 Cloud Works

I'm a huge advocate of zone coverage. Drop zone is what the majority of the best players run. You don't see match often. You don't see pure Cover 0 or Cover 1. Usually it's zone.

In normal Cover 3, high safety is in flat zone. In Cover 3 Cloud, he's in almost a deep half. Like a Cover 2 look going to the top. Always on weak side.

Protects one of the biggest weaknesses in Cover 3: the weak side seam.

How to Run It

  1. Click right stick in
  2. Go down into zone drops
  3. Put zone drop flats at 10 yards: nice healthy depth
  4. Find your Cover 3 Cloud wherever it is
  5. Press Y/Triangle and go down on right stick

Combine with other stuff:

  • Long situation? Drop zone drops deeper
  • If possible, stunt

Help protect the seam opposite the middle third. Middle third's on the left? Protect right seam. Work back into middle and make plays.

Our user is active in this defense. By far the best base defense to work everything else out of.

How Do I Lock Down the Red Zone?

Red zone situations seem way less stressful because everything's covered.

When they break the 10 yard line: click right stick in for coaching adjustments.

Put flats and hooks at closest yard line to how far they are from end zone:

  • They're at the seven? Go five and five
  • They're at the eight? Go 10 and 10

Call any defensive formation and go Tampa 2.

The Adjustment

Take both safeties and put them in Inside Quarters:

  1. Double tap Y/Triangle
  2. Both safeties get an icon
  3. Select icon, go right on right stick for both

Gets them playing close to protect the seam.

I believe in pinching defense. Even show blitz sometimes, right on D-pad, right bumper, to get defense pressed in.

I user a yellow zone. First thing I defend, the seam.

What I want them to throw, back corners of the end zone. Your eyes should always look at back corners.

Example: Third and Goal from the 20

  • Flats to 20, hooks to 20
  • Tampa 2
  • Always Tampa 2 here. No other coverage makes sense. None.

They snap. We're in that seam - defended. They want to throw underneath, fine. But we get an easy sack for a stop.

What's the Craziest Defense That Actually Works?

The Two-Man Rush. Best used about once per game against people who pass the ball a ton.

Setup Steps

Base Coverage:

  • Go into Cover 2 Man
  • User one of the deep zones (either safety)
  • BE CAREFUL. This can get you burnt

Spread the Line:
Left on D-pad, up and left stick to spread defensive line

Zone Out Two D-Linemen:

  • Pick two defensive linemen on same side
  • Put one in Hard Flat
  • Put other in QB Spy

How to Play It

When ball snaps:

  • Immediately look over top. You are that deep zone
  • Then play underneath and help coverage
  • Only sending two people with full max zone coverage
  • Get really aggressive. Switch stick around
  • Ton of people in coverage where they can't do much

Put Hard Flat opposite where you think their strength is. Three receivers right side? They're attacking left side.

With safety user. If you don't need deep, roam entire middle of field.

Some people beat this easy. But a lot of people really struggle. When you play this against them. It's like there's nothing they can do.

Why Does My Defense Feel So Complicated?

Here's the truth. The best defenses, everyone knows their assignment. Simple.

I'm watching people play College 26. They run defenses, try different things, but don't actually know anybody's assignment. That's a HUGE deal.

If you're running match coverage and have no idea how your team's matching against vertical from number two and outside release from number one. You shouldn't run that coverage.

If you're running Cover One and have no idea the responsibility of the robber zone. You shouldn't use that coverage.

If you're running Mid Blitz or Cover Zero, like Overstorm Brave, and putting somebody in bad responsibility, it doesn't work.

Example of Bad Assignment

Look at this guy's responsibility. Supposed to blitz. Think how far away he is from quarterback. He's 10 yards away.

His responsibility doesn't make sense. If he comes free, one Mississippi, two Mississippi.. so much time.

I knew his responsibility, but it wasn't realistic. He's never getting to the quarterback.

Make the defense simple on yourself and your defense will improve a ton.
