Everything EA Just Changed In Madden 27! (NEW UPDATE)

Madden 27GeneralOffenseUser DefenseBlitzCoverageDefense

Quick Recap:

EA patched the Contain Blitz — offensive tackles now block linebackers moved out wide, so that free pressure is gone. The Formation Flip bug is fixed too, meaning your defenders realign correctly and quickly when you flip your defense. Holding penalties are up, jump catches got toned down, but yellow zones are still broken.

TL;DR: EA just dropped a new update for Madden 27, and it hits a few big things. The #1 Contain Blitz got patched. It used to be 100% unblockable. Now offensive tackles actually block it, so it's nowhere near as strong. The Formation Flip bug got fixed too, so your defenders actually run over to the right side with some urgency instead of lolly gagging. And there's a gameplay update touching holding penalties, block shedding, and wide receiver jump catches.

Here's the short version of what changed:

  • Contain Blitz nerfed — tackles now block linebackers moved out wide. Not unblockable anymore.
  • Formation Flip fixed — flipping your defense now realigns everybody correctly and fast.
  • Aggressive blocking — more holding penalties show up, but it's not a huge deal.
  • Wide receiver awareness — no more crazy jump catches. Receivers catch what they should.
  • Blocking overall — feels legit. Run blocking opened up late.
  • Yellow zones — still an issue. Not fixed.

Below I break down each change so you know exactly what still works and what doesn't. Let's go.

Did EA patch the Contain Blitz in Madden 27?

Yes. This was one of the biggest changes in the update.

The Contain Blitz was one of the most annoying blitzes in the game. Here's what people were doing:

  • Call a formation that lets you move linebackers out wide
  • Move them out wide
  • Then Contain

The offensive tackles just wouldn't see them. The blitz came screaming in. Free pressure. 100% success rate.

Here are the two key patch notes:

  • Offensive tackles are now more effective at targeting and blocking defenders on contain assignments
  • Offensive tackles will now correctly identify and block linebackers in wide alignment

So what does it look like now? It just doesn't work that well. The tackles block it back to back.

Does that mean it won't work AT ALL? No. The concept still makes sense. You've got an edge rusher coming in — not unlike a Slot Corner Blitz. But it's not unblockable anymore.

How do you still run the Contain Blitz after the patch?

If you still want to run it — move your user down into the box. It'll distract the offense for a moment and help the blitz get home.

But even then. The targeting from the offensive tackles is phenomenal now. Don't expect what you used to get.

Did the Formation Flip bug get fixed in Madden 27?

Yes. They changed how flipping a defensive play works. It will now correctly realign all defenders as expected.

What was the old Formation Flip bug?

There was a huge issue. You could flip your defensive play and everybody would be super slow — or just get stuck.

Here's the problem in action:

  • The offense flips their formation (this happens all the time)
  • You want to flip your defense to get your slot corner (Gene) over to the other side
  • But when you flipped, a lot of times he'd just stay there with his zone across the field
  • Or he'd lolly gag and maybe get over in time before the snap

Without a doubt, the offense takes advantage of him being on the wrong side of the field.

How does Formation Flip work now?

When you flip — or the offense flips and you want to flip with them — your team actually gets over there with a little bit of urgency.

It's not perfect. And it's not as good as College Football's version. In College Football, if you have Auto Flip On, your defense flips automatically when the offense flips. Which is kind of crazy.

But Gene is doing a pretty good job. You can send him back and forth. This is pretty reactive and fixes a big bug that's been in the game for a while.

What did the Madden 27 gameplay update change?

Here's what EA said they changed:

  • Aggressive blocking coach adjustment will now result in more realistic holding penalties
  • Higher rated defenders will now have a greater chance at shedding blocks against lower rated opponents
  • Improved walking (blitzing/blocking) assignments
  • Improved wide receiver awareness to prevent unnecessary jump catches

A note: several of these can only be tested in-game. If they're the same as what got done in College last week, they're mostly successful changes.

Does aggressive blocking cause more holding penalties in Madden 27?

First thing to test — turn on aggressive blocking, go into a live game, and see what happens. Also curious whether holding turbo makes you more likely to get a holding call.

Here's what showed up after a few runs:

  • Two runs — no penalty
  • Three runs — got one holding call
  • Dropped back to pass, threw a pick, but also got a holding penalty
  • Got some pancakes, but nothing where it felt huge

The verdict: Turned it off. Seen enough. It's definitely doing something — holding penalties are showing up — but it doesn't seem like the best thing ever. Might be a workaround using macros. Heard about that. Not testing that here.

Are jump catches fixed in Madden 27?

This is the one worth paying attention to.

  • Receivers are catching what they should
  • No crazy jump catches happening
  • Playing college rules, guys are able to get one or two feet in bounds (surprising at times)
  • Nothing where you're watching it like, "what are we doing right here"

If this is the same fix they pushed in College last week — it worked there. Seems like it's working here too.

Is run blocking better in the new Madden 27 update?

Blocking overall is harder to judge. It's subjective. Changes play to play.

But. Late in the game, run blocking opened up in a real way. Big run. Laid the hammer.

Blocking feels pretty legit.

Double-or-nothings on D-tackles are pretty nuts too. Worth noting.

Is the Madden 27 update good overall?

Trying to think of something to be upset about. Can't really find much.

  • Blocking seems solid
  • Receivers are behaving the way they should
  • Getting loops on the pass rush
  • Yellow zones — NOT loving those. Still an issue.

Patch seems great overall. The fix to the wide out contains and loop width is pretty legit. Yellow zones still need work.

So — the Contain Blitz got toned down, the Formation Flip bug is gone, and the gameplay feels cleaner. Adjust your scheme, drop your user in the box if you still want that edge pressure, and keep an eye on those yellow zones until EA fixes them.
