TL;DR: EA just dropped a huge patch on College Football 27 and it changed a bunch of stuff you're using every game. Here's the short version:
- Aggressive Blocking now actually calls holding penalties. It's still good, but not free anymore.
- The Contain Glitch got patched. Offensive tackles now pick up wide contain blitzes and looping defensive ends.
- WRs Jumping For Passes when they didn't need to - fixed.
- Slot Corner Flipping is solved. Turn on Auto Flip Defensive Play Call and your defense flips on its own.
- Three smaller fixes too - hurry-up assignments, defender shed chances, and zone block targeting.
This is the fastest we've ever seen EA go after broken stuff. Two run game fixes in two weeks. Let's break it all down.
Did EA nerf Aggressive Blocking in College Football 27?
Yes. And it's a good thing.
For the first month and a half, a ton of players flipped their blocking coaching adjustment to aggressive every time they ran the ball. Here's what it did:
- Gave you longer, more effective blocks in the run game
- Was SUPPOSED to increase holding penalties as the tradeoff
- But those holding calls almost never came
So it was free. Better blocks, no downside. Overpowered.
Civil tested the patch. Ran aggressive blocking a full game, twice, just to see. Here's what happened now:
- Not guaranteed - but holding calls came more often than not across the game
- Not just on runs. Holding on passes too
- It got annoying, fast
The blocks are still effective. The run game isn't dead. But you're not getting a guard holding a DT for four seconds or a receiver wiping out a whole secondary anymore.
If you turn aggressive on for better blocks, you should FEEL the risk. That's the point.
This is the second run game fix in two weeks:
- Last week - EA patched the speed boost
- This week - EA patched aggressive blocking (a massive hit, blocks are more realistic)
Both aimed at the same thing. A run game that was too strong coming into the year. Civil's take: this one's confirmed, and it's an awesome fix.
Is the Contain Glitch fixed in CFB 27?
Yes. EA fixed two things that go together.
The official patch notes say:
- Improved offensive tackle targeting when facing contained defenders
- Fixed an issue where offensive tackles couldn't identify linebackers moved to a wide alignment in formations like 33 Cub and others where people ran this
The two versions of the bug
Version 1 - The Wide Contain Blitz
People blitzed an outside linebacker and dragged him wide into a contain. Once he was out there, the offensive tackle just did nothing. Free rush.
Pre-patch: drag the contain on #11, and #78 the tackle doesn't do anything. Free rush.
Version 2 - Contained Defensive Ends Looping
If you contained defensive ends, they'd get crazy loop animations and slip around the tackle. Inconsistent, but super annoying when it hit.
What it looks like after the patch
- Move the outside linebacker wide - the tackle picks him up now
- One clip showed a guy still coming free. But Civil's read: the user was mugging #51 the right guard, the tackle took #72, the guard hesitated and got sucked into a double team. That's a user issue, not a glitch
- The wide contain blitz might still be okay - but it's NOT as good. Pre-patch that was a sack pretty consistently
In practice mode: contain, move Law out (got a weird jump animation), and #70 locks onto him easily. There are probably still ways to scheme around it - if you hover you can get a nice shed - but the TARGETING is fixed.
Defensive ends in contain also get handled better by the tackles now.
Props to EA. This was only meta for about 10 days.
Are receivers still jumping for passes when they shouldn't?
EA fixed the issue that made receivers jump for catches when they didn't need to.
This one's harder to test. But while playing earlier, it didn't seem like receivers were jumping at all.
Being honest - this wasn't a big complaint for Civil before the patch. So a little biased here. It just wasn't showing up much either way. But it was a big deal for some of you.
Drop this in the comments after you play: Are you still seeing receivers jump for no reason - or are their feet staying on the ground more now?
How to keep your receiver's feet on the ground
- Click onto your receiver manually
- Go for a possession catch or a RAC catch
If you go for an aggressive catch, or don't click on at all, your receivers are more likely to leave their feet and jump. So there's that too.
How do I fix Slot Corner Flipping in College Football 27?
Turn on Auto Flip Defensive Play Call. Done.
This was an incredibly annoying issue. Slot defenders sometimes wouldn't flip when you flipped your play.
What the problem looked like:
- You've got a slot corner on the right side
- Offense shifts strength to the right. Checks out
- They flip their play
- You want to flip with them so your slot corner stays on the strong side
- You tap X or Square, then Right Trigger to flip
- Your slot corner gets stuck
That happened constantly. Led to misalignments, big runs, big passes, blown coverages. All of it.
What Auto Flip does now
- Call Tampa Two
- Slot corner is up top, walking down, C over his head
- Offense flips their play
- Your defense flips automatically. Slot gets over there on its own
You don't have to flip anymore. You're just good. They can flip back and forth like a fool - doesn't matter. Auto flip handles it.
Tested it in games earlier while labbing the patch. It's incredible.
Note: If your formation doesn't naturally flip, it won't flip. But for formations that do - this rocks.
Also tested Cover Three Sky. Even with one high safety where it almost looks symmetrical - flip the offense, boom, defense flips. Works.

What else did the CFB 27 patch fix? (Recap)
Three more fixes. Harder to test on our end, but EA addressed them:
- Custom adjusted defenders sometimes had the wrong assignment during hurry-up
- Defender non-engage win chances were tuned. Basically, if a defender has a higher rating than the blocker on him, he now has a better shot at getting a shed
- Zone block targeting was improved across play types. Different zone runs should get better blocking from linemen and running backs
Is EA actually fixing College Football 27 fast?
Yeah. Every game across gaming has bugs. That's just reality.
But this year? This is the fastest Civil's ever seen EA go after this stuff. Speed boosting, the contain glitch, all of it.
Some people call it being a shill for saying so. But this is MORE patches than we've ever seen at this point in a game. And they've all been the same simple thing - here's something obviously broken, let's acknowledge it and fix it.
That's really all we can ask for as gamers.
