Here's the deal — you probably lose games because you're making football harder than it needs to be. These 10 plays work WITHOUT hot routes. WITHOUT adjustments. WITHOUT memorizing complex schemes.
Just call the play. Make simple reads. Win more games.
Every play shown here works on Heisman difficulty. If it works against the CPU at the hardest level, it'll work online.
RPO Read Y Flat — The Triple Option That Actually Works
Playbook: Oregon Offensive Playbook → Gun Doubles Offset Weak → RPO Read Y Flat
This play gives you THREE options on one snap. Not two like most RPOs — three.
Pre-Snap Setup:
- Motion your tight end across the formation
- Hold B/Circle, use D-pad to select the tight end
- Release B/Circle and motion him across
- This gets him to the flat FASTER with a clean release
Your Three Options:
- Read Option - Give: Watch the read key. He crashes down? Hand it off.
- Read Option - Keep: Defender stays put or widens? Hold A/X to pull it. Hold right trigger and GO.
- RPO Flat Route: Hit the tight end leaking to the sideline.
Works anywhere on the field. Works in the red zone. Works on the goal line. And the defense can't stop all three options at once.
D Post X Curl — Zero Hot Routes, Maximum Results
Formation: Gun Doubles Y Off
Play: D Post X Curl
Playbook: Vanderbilt (plus others)
This might be the BEST play in the game when you need zero adjustments. Just snap and read.
Quick Reads (Check These First):
- Quick out route on the left — use outside pass lead (push left stick outside)
- Halfback table route to the right flat
Middle Field Reads (Second Look):
- Post route — attacks the soft spot between deep and underneath coverage
- Curl/Snag route (B receiver) — sits in zone windows
Here's why the post route KILLS defenses — they defend the out underneath AND the streak deep. That leaves a massive hole in between. The post attacks it late.
Don't force throws. Take what's there. If they keep leaving the post open, keep taking it.
Flood Trail from Singleback — Mix Run and Pass Without Changing Formation
Formation: Single Back Deuce Close
Play: Flood Trail
Playbook: Arizona (plus others)
This formation is BALANCED. Defense can't predict run or pass. And you get both.
The Pass Concept:
- Streak route (vertical)
- Corner route (intermediate)
- Drag route (underneath)
- Backside tight end angle route
Your Run Game From Same Formation:
- Halfback Dive
- QB Sweep
- 01 Trap
- Stretch plays
Read Progression:
- Check the slot drag first — ALWAYS look underneath
- If drag is covered, work up to the corner route
- The corner route beats the drag coverage consistently
Use this against any coverage except heavy blitz. Perfect for road games — no hot routes needed when the crowd is loud.

Mesh Post — The Road Game Special
Formation: Gun Cluster
Playbook: Notre Dame ONLY (or custom playbooks)
When the crowd noise is CRAZY and you see question marks instead of routes — this play saves you.
Route Concept:
- Double drag routes (mesh in the middle)
- Post route over the top
- Halfback flat
- Wheel route (rarely open)
The Read (In Order):
1. Halfback Flat — Eyes go here FIRST. Like it? Hit it. Don't like it? GET YOUR EYES OFF.
2. Drag Routes — Read the middle. Find the open spot in the mesh.
3. Post Route — This is the KILLER. It's a short, sharp post. One of the best routes in the game.
Against pressure? Both drags beat it. Learn your button assignments at the play call screen — you'll need them on the road.
HB Stretch and HB Dive — The Run Scheme That Works on Heisman
Playbook: Arkansas State → Singleback Wing Tight
Plays: HB Stretch and HB Dive
I ran this as Arkansas State against Texas on Heisman. If it works there, it works anywhere.
Pre-Snap Adjustments:
- Flip the run — Use right stick to run to better numbers
- Motion for blockers — Get an extra body to your run side for chip blocks
- Check matchups — Hold left trigger, push right stick to see blocking
The Mix:
- HB Stretch — bounce outside OR cut back
- HB Dive — hits the gut when they widen for stretch
This isn't a one-play touchdown scheme. It's consistent yards. Use it for short yardage, clock management, or keeping defenses honest.
PA Motion Slide — Three Easy Reads That Always Work
Formation: Gun Y-Off Trips
Play: PA Motion Slide (PA MTN Slide)
Playbook: Akron (plus many others)
Play action with a simple flood concept. Three reads. That's it.
Read 1 - Flat Route: Running back to the flat. Hit it quick. Make them respect it.
Read 2 - Comeback Route: Gets one-on-one coverage. When the DB has his back turned running with your guy — he doesn't know the comeback is coming. YOU DO. Throw it down and away.
Read 3 - Over Route: Crosses the middle. CPU won't leave it open much. Online opponents might if they're usering wrong.
Tap right trigger to speed up play action. No hot routes needed. Went 7 for 8 testing this against Washington on Heisman.
Red Zone Scissors — Score in the Red Zone Without Thinking
Playbook: Texas → Gun Normal Y Off Close
Play: Red Zone Scissors
Almost EVERY playbook has this play. Just search "Red Zone Scissors" in different formations.
Strong Side Routes:
- Post route (clears out)
- Tight end flat
- Halfback corner
Backside Routes:
- In route (late read)
- Comeback (isolated)
How to Read It:
- Check tight end flat, then halfback corner above him
- Work back to the in route
- Check backside comeback for one-on-one
PRO TIP: Keep this to the SHORT SIDE of the field. On opposite hash? Flip it. Corner and flat routes work better to the boundary.
Double Pivot — Five Wide Without Hot Routes
Formation: Gun Empty Trio
Play: Double Pivot
Available in multiple playbooks
My FAVORITE five wide play. No adjustments needed.
The Concept: Zig routes on both sides. They get open against everything.
Your Reads:
- Left zig route — throw BEFORE he breaks
- Right zig route — same timing
- Comeback route — over the right zig. DB has back turned? It's money.
- In route — check if middle field is empty
High completion percentage. Great run after catch on the zigs. Simple reads.
RPO Read Y Flat Version 2 — The Four-Option Monster
Formation: Gun Trips Tight End
Playbook: Alabama
Play: RPO Read Y Flat
This one gives you FOUR options instead of three:
- Bubble screen left
- Read option handoff
- QB keeper
- Tight end flat route right
I'll be honest — making all four reads is HARD. But the versatility is unmatched. I called this play three times in a row and had three different players touch the ball.
Take what the defense gives you. Against CPU, the flat might not open. Online users will leave it wide open.
Flood from Gun Tight Slots — The Money Play Nobody Knows
Playbook: Houston or Old Dominion ONLY
Formation: Gun Tight Slots HB Weak
Play: Flood (bottom of play menu)
Position your halfback to the SHORT SIDE of the field.
Read It Like This:
- Halfback flat — see space? Hit it NOW
- Tight end drag — great against man and zone
- Corner route — pass lead to sideline with left stick
- In route — available but can bunch with the drag
Don't always wait for the deep corner. Take what's underneath. This play hits open receivers at every level.
Optional adjustment: Put the in-route guy on a return route for better spacing.
That's it. Ten plays. No complicated schemes. No hot route memorization. Just call the play and read the defense.
Stop making football harder than it needs to be. These plays work because they attack basic defensive rules — and defenses can't stop everything at once.
