Blowup Shotgun Runs

CFB 26DefenseRun GameUser Defense

Quick Recap:

Gap shoot from Nickel 3-3 Mint that destroys shotgun runs every time. Spread your D-line and show blitz, then user the linebacker opposite the halfback and move him to the halfback side to break the blocking assignments. Works against Inside Zone, Duo, and all shotgun run concepts.

What Is the Blowup Shotgun Run

Simple gap shoot that destroys shotgun runs. Your user defender runs free and tackles the back in the backfield — almost every single time.

Gap shoot means your defender isn't getting blocked. The offense screws up their blocking assignments. You walk right through and blow up the play.

Formation: Nickel 3-3 Mint
Play: Any coverage — Cover Three Sky works
Adjustments: Two quick pre-snap moves

That's it. Two adjustments and you're done.

How to Set Up Blowup Shotgun Runs

The Formation

Get into Nickel 3-3 Mint. Most playbooks have this or something close to it. Doesn't matter what team you're using — this formation is everywhere.

Pick any play. Cover Three Sky is solid but the coverage doesn't really matter. You're stopping the run before it starts.

The Two Adjustments

Step 1: Spread defensive line
Left on D-pad, up on left stick. Gets your linemen wider.

Step 2: Show blitz linebacker
Right on D-pad, right bumper (R1). Brings a backer to the line.

Done. Two button presses and you're ready to destroy their run game.

The User Movement

Here's the key part — use the linebacker opposite of the halfback. If the back is lined up left, take the right linebacker. If he's right, take the left linebacker.

Then move your guy to the halfback side. You'll see the blocking assignments change when you move around. That's what you want.

Move right and watch — nobody's blocking your linebacker anymore. The offense can't figure out who should pick him up.

When to Use This Gap Shoot

EVERY shotgun run. Inside Zone, Duo, whatever they're calling. This works against all of it.

Best part — you can check into this whenever you want. See them come out in shotgun? Audible to this and watch them lose yards.

Don't spam it though. Hit them once or twice and they'll probably stop running. That's actually perfect — now you can play whatever coverage you want.

Why This Works So Well

The blocking math doesn't work for the offense. They have five blockers trying to account for six or seven defenders in the box.

When you move your linebacker around pre-snap, it messes up their targeting. The center and guards can't figure out who's supposed to block your user.

Against Inside Zone: Your linebacker shoots the gap free. Easy tackle in the backfield.

Against Duo: Stand right on top of the defensive tackle, then come downhill. The back has nowhere to go.

Even when YOU don't come free — somebody else usually does. That's what makes gap shoots so nasty. The offense can't block everybody.

What Counters Blowup Shotgun Runs

This isn't unstoppable. Smart players will adjust.

Under center runs work better against this. Power runs especially. You might not come free as much, but somebody else usually will.

Quick passes beat this hard. Slants, hitches, anything fast. If they see you loading up the box, they'll throw over your head.

RPOs (Run Pass Options) can hurt you. The QB reads your linebacker and throws if you crash down on the run.

Once you use this a couple times, expect them to start throwing more. That's fine — now you know they're not running and you can play coverage.

Common Mistakes with Gap Shoots

Using it too much: Don't call this every play. Hit them hard, make them respect it, then go back to regular coverage.

Wrong linebacker: Remember — opposite of the halfback, then move to the halfback side. Don't just pick any linebacker.

Not moving pre-snap: The movement is what breaks the blocking. Stand still and they'll find someone to block you.

Panicking on pass: If they throw instead of run, just play your coverage. Don't chase the QB around like crazy.

Making This Part of Your Game Plan

This is really good run defense that you can check into whenever you want. But it's not your only defense.

Use it to establish that you can stop the run. Once they know you can blow up their ground game, they'll start throwing more. That's when you switch to your coverage concepts and pick them apart.

The goal isn't to use this every snap — it's to have it ready when you need it. Fourth and short? Check to this. They keep pounding Inside Zone? Check to this.

Balance is key. Stop their run game early, then play coverage the rest of the game.
