Texas 4 Man Blocking

CFB 26DefenseBlitz

Quick Recap:

Texas 4 Man is a brutal pass rush concept, but EA's patch lets running backs handle it better with half slide protection. Wire your RB to pass protect (Triangle/Y + Right trigger), activate half slide (Left bumper), then slide opposite your halfback's direction for double coverage on the stunt side. Your RB will actually engage rushers now instead of whiffing completely.

What is Texas 4 Man Blocking

Texas 4 Man is a NASTY pass rush concept that absolutely screams when it comes in. You've felt this pressure if you've played College Football 26 at all.

The good news? EA made a key change to help you block it. In the patch notes: "Running back blocking improvements. Running backs now handle Texas stunts more effectively when using half slide protection."

Here's the deal — your halfback can actually pick this up now. Not perfectly. He's still gonna get shedded sometimes. That's football, baby. But he'll ENGAGE the rusher instead of whiffing completely.

The setup is simple:

  • Block your halfback — Triangle/Y button, select the RB
  • Pass block him — Right trigger
  • Half slide protection — Left bumper/L1
  • Pick direction — Right stick to slide left or right

Your halfback getting beat is NOT the same as missing the block. Elite edge rushers beat halfbacks. That's normal. The difference is engagement vs. getting run past completely.

How to Set Up Half Slide Protection

Half slide is your MAIN weapon against Texas 4 Man. Here's the exact sequence:

  1. Pre-snap — Identify the Texas stunt coming
  2. Wire your RB — Triangle/Y, highlight the running back
  3. Pass protect — Right trigger to keep him in
  4. Half slide — Tap left bumper/L1 once
  5. Direction — Right stick to slide toward or away from RB

The offensive line indicator will show you it's active. You'll see the protection shift.

Pro move — Go opposite direction from your halfback. If he's lined up right, slide left. This gives you double coverage on the stunt side.

Auto Base Protection Shortcut

If someone's running Texas 4 Man ALL GAME:

  • Click right stick pre-snap
  • Go to auto base protection
  • Set to half slide left or half slide right

Now every play breaks the huddle with half slide already on. You just block the RB and go.

When to Use This Protection

Use half slide + RB blocking when you see:

  • 4 man rush with movement pre-snap
  • Edge rushers showing stunt alignment
  • Texas concepts — tackles and ends crossing
  • Repeated pressure from the same side

DON'T use it against:

  • 5+ man blitz — You need the RB in the route
  • Coverage beaters — Quick slants, hitches work better
  • Run concepts — Obviously

Why This Works in College Football 26

EA's patch made RBs smarter against stunts. Before the update, halfbacks would completely miss assignments on crossing rushers.

Now your RB will:

  • Cut block when he can't square up
  • Engage properly instead of running past
  • Buy time even when getting beat

The half slide helps because it:

  • Assigns gap responsibility clearly
  • Prevents confusion on crossing stunts
  • Creates double teams where needed

What Counters This Strategy

Smart opponents will adjust when you start picking up their Texas rush:

5+ Man Pressure

If they bring an extra rusher, your RB can't block two guys. You need:

  • Hot routes — Quick slants, hitches
  • Slide protection toward the blitz
  • Max protect — Keep TE and RB both in

Coverage Adjustments

When 4 man rush isn't working, they'll play:

  • Cover 2 Man — Bracket your best receiver
  • Robber coverage — Lurk the middle
  • Press coverage — Jam at the line

Different Rush Angles

They might switch to:

  • Inside stunts — Guards and center
  • Delayed blitz — LB comes late
  • Overload rush — Stack one side

Common Mistakes When Blocking Texas 4 Man

Forgetting to block the RB — Half slide alone won't work. You NEED the running back in protection.

Wrong slide direction — Don't slide into the stunt. Go away from it or use the RB to handle the stunt side.

Holding the ball too long — Even good protection breaks down. Get the ball out in 3 seconds.

Not adjusting routes — If they keep bringing heat, your receivers need to sit down in zones or break off routes.

Expecting perfection — Your RB will get beat sometimes. That's football. The goal is engagement, not shutouts.

The bottom line — this EA change actually works. Half slide + RB blocking gives you a real chance against Texas 4 Man pressure. It's not magic, but it's MUCH better than getting run over every play.
