Max Protect Passing

CFB 26OffensePassingBlitz

Quick Recap:

Max protect passing means blocking your RB and TE while sending out only 3-4 routes against heavy blitzes like mid blitz and cover zero. Execute it by pressing LB/L1 + up on right stick, then fix your routes to beat the reduced coverage. Use it when they're bringing 6+ rushers consistently, but avoid it against 4-man rushes where you're wasting receivers.

What Is Max Protect Passing

Max protect passing is stupid simple — block everybody and send out fewer routes.

When you're getting destroyed by mid blitz or cover zero pressure, you have two choices: run the ball or block the blitz and pass. Max protect is the passing option.

Here's how it works:

  • Block your halfback
  • Block your tight end
  • Send out 3-4 routes max
  • Make those routes count

You execute this by pressing LB or L1 and going up on the right stick — that blocks everybody. Or you can hot route your RB and TE individually.

The logic? They're blitzing 6-7 guys. If you give yourself time in the pocket, it's gonna be a pain for them to cover your routes. Time beats pressure when your routes are good.

When to Use Max Protect

Use max protect when:

  • They're running mid blitz consistently
  • Cover zero is killing you
  • You need 3rd down conversions
  • They have an aggressive user over the middle

Don't use it when:

  • They're only rushing 4 — you're wasting receivers
  • You need quick scores — fewer routes = fewer options
  • They're sitting in deep zones — run something horizontal instead

The key indicator: if they're bringing more than 5 rushers consistently, max protect becomes your friend.

How to Set Up Max Protect Concepts

Step 1: Audible to a passing formation if you're in a run look

Step 2: Press LB/L1 and up on right stick to max protect everyone

Step 3: Fix your routes — this is critical

Here's the thing most people mess up — if you only have 3 routes on the field, ALL of them need to beat man coverage.

Bad route combo example:

  • Fade against off coverage (useless)
  • Post route
  • Drag

Good route combo example:

  • Comeback route (beats man, gets open on sideline)
  • Drag route (beats man, gets open underneath)
  • In route (beats man, attacks middle)

Gun Woff Trio Weak is a solid formation for this, but these concepts work from any formation.

Route Adjustments That Work

When you see a route that won't get open, change it:

  • Fade vs off coverage → Change to comeback or drag
  • Deep routes vs aggressive user → Change to comebacks on sideline
  • Multiple routes in same area → Spread them out

Your routes need to complement each other. Make the defense pick their poison.

Why Max Protect Works

Simple math — they can't cover everything when you have time.

When they blitz 6-7 guys, they have 4-5 guys in coverage. If you block all the pressure and send out 3-4 routes that beat man, someone's getting open.

Even with a good user defender, you're creating multiple problems:

  • Drag beats man underneath
  • In route beats man over middle
  • Comeback beats man on sideline

User sits on the drag? Hit the comeback. User takes away the middle? Hit the drag. They can't be everywhere.

Plus — contested catches become easier when you have time. No pressure means better accuracy, better timing, better chance your receiver wins the 50/50 ball.

What Counters Max Protect

Smart opponents will adjust:

Coverage adjustments:

  • Drop into more zone coverage
  • User different areas to take away your best route
  • Bracket your favorite receiver

Pressure adjustments:

  • Send delayed blitzes
  • Rush 4 and drop 7 into coverage
  • Mix in coverage looks to confuse your reads

Your counter to their counters:

  • Have multiple route combos ready
  • Mix in some 5-7 step drops without max protect
  • Use motion to identify their coverage
  • Don't get predictable — vary your route combinations

Common Max Protect Mistakes

Mistake #1: Using bad route combinations

Don't send out routes that won't get open. Every route matters when you only have 3-4.

Mistake #2: Getting impatient

Max protect routes take longer to develop. Trust your blocking and let routes get open.

Mistake #3: Staring down one receiver

Read the whole field. If the drag's covered, look at the comeback. If the comeback's covered, find the in route.

Mistake #4: Overusing it

Max protect is a tool, not your entire offense. Mix it in when they're pressuring you consistently.

Mistake #5: Poor pre-snap reading

Know where pressure is coming from. If they're only rushing 4, you don't need max protect.

Max protect passing isn't complicated — block the blitz, send out routes that beat man coverage, trust the process. When they bring heat, you bring patience.
