What Is the Shotgun Classic Offensive Playbook in Madden 27?
Shotgun Classic is a shotgun-heavy playbook. Almost everything you run comes out of gun formations. Sets cover Gun, Goal Line, Hail Mary, and Special Teams. That's it. No fluff. If you want a balanced run/pass playbook with a ton of under-center stuff, this isn't it.
But if you want formations, motions, and play variety that most people have never seen before, this is it.
The playbook includes:
- Bunch Tight End
- Bunch Strong Offset
- Bunch Spread Nasty
- Doubles, Doubles Hip, Doubles Flex
- Doubles Clamp Stack, they added this because they know it's a problem
- Tight Y Off / Tight Y Off Weak / Tight Doubles
- Trips Tight End
- Y Off True Close / Y Off X Close (essentially UT Trips)
- Spread Y Flex
- A few Five-Wide / Empty sets
There are also some heavier formations, Split Pro Near and Split Y Off Close, for when you want to mix in a run game or keep defenders off balance.
20 different people could run this playbook and have 20 completely different offenses. That's how much is in here.
What Plays Should You Know First in Shotgun Classic?
MTN Dig Under
One of the staples. Note. In Madden 27, the outside route was changed to a standard drag route. Still works. Still creates tons of options depending on your setup. Learn this play early.
RPO Alert Bubble. Bunch Head
This one doesn't get talked about enough. It's underrated. The bubble creates an easy read. If the defense overloads the box, you hit the bubble. Aaron Rodgers to DK Metcalf. 14-yard gain. Easy pitch and catch.
RPO Alert Swing, Y Off True Close
Man coverage, stacked box, doesn't matter. DK in the flat. The defense can't stop both the run read AND the swing. This is how you punish aggressive defenses.
Curl Flat. Trips Tight End
Classic play. Corner blitz came. DK's chip block cleaned it up. Big gain. When you know your plays, you don't panic. You just execute.
Motion Diamond Fake Mesh Rail
The auto motion on this one creates a diamond formation. A set diamond right. The zig route on the left is unlike anything you see in most playbooks. Unique look. Hard for defenders to process pre-snap.
How Do You Use the Run Game Out of Shotgun Classic?
Yes. You can run the ball out of this playbook. It's not a passing-only scheme.
The heavier sets to know:
- Split Y Off Close, Inside Zone, use low motion to move the defense before the snap
- Split Pro Near, Outside Zone Left, Spinner Halfback Zone Right
- UFO Trips, QB runs available here
- Strong Offset, Shuffle Motion Halfback Swing
The motion-based runs are the key. When you're playing someone online, they're going to cheat toward the motion almost every time. That's the trap. Motion the back one way. Hit the Inside Zone up the middle. They gave it to you.
This is the run/pass balance thing that matters most: one reliable run play from your passing formations forces defenses to respect both threats. You don't need 10 run plays. You need one they have to account for.
When Should You Actually Use Shotgun Classic?
Use this playbook when:
- You want variety. Formations your opponent probably hasn't scouted
- You're comfortable calling audibles and using pre-snap motion
- You want RPO options baked into your offense without building them from scratch
- You want Bunch formations and spread looks and tight formations all in one book
Don't use this playbook if you're still learning the basics. There's a lot here. Picking one or two formations and mastering those first is the move.
What Counters Shotgun Classic?
The biggest threats you'll face running this:
- Aggressive man coverage with a stacked box. Counter with the RPO Alert Swing out of Y Off True Close. Get the ball to your best skill player in space.
- Zone coverage dropping into short areas. Shotgun Classic has enough horizontal route concepts to attack zone. Baby dots, routes 15 yards or shorter, create a 5 vs 4 advantage against zone. Attack across, not up.
- Corner blitzes. Curl Flat out of Trips Tight End has a built-in answer. Your tight end or back picks up the blitz. Trust the protection.
- Defenders cheating your motion. Use it against them. That's the whole point of the motion run game. Let them over-pursue, then go the other way.
What Are the Most Common Mistakes Running This Playbook?
- Holding turbo while cutting. Don't. Turbo in traffic kills your agility. Use it in open field only. Not through the line, not on cuts.
- Ignoring the motion game. The motions in Shotgun Classic show up in formations where you don't normally see them. That's the advantage. If you're not using pre-snap motion, you're leaving the best parts of this playbook on the table.
- Trying to run everything at once. Pick two or three formations. Learn them cold. Then add more. You don't need to run the whole playbook Week 1.
- Abandoning the run after one bad play. The motion run game in this playbook works. But you have to stay committed. One run for a loss doesn't mean it's dead. It means the defense guessed right once.
Bottom Line on Shotgun Classic
This playbook is nasty. Motions you don't normally see. Formations that create problems before the snap. RPOs that punish aggressive defenses. A run game you can actually use without leaving the shotgun.
It's not complicated. Learn a few plays. Use the motion. Make your reads. Do the work. And your opponents won't have answers.
