TL;DR: The best offensive playbooks in College Football 27 are Oregon State, Fresno State, Florida, California, and Wyoming. Here's the quick version:
- Oregon State — explosive Pistol runs and Bunch X Nasty passing. Halfback Zone from Pistol is a must-use.
- Fresno State — snap the ball and go. Gun Tight Doubles carries it. No hot routes needed.
- Florida — Gun Bunch Tight End and the swing series. Taking Twitter by storm.
- California — all-around great. Five Wide Receiver Tight, Clear Deep, Mesh Post, and a ton of formations.
- Wyoming — Pistol runs with a fullback, Gun Ace Slot, and RPO Read Y Flat that just works.
If you want plug-and-play stuff that wins games — these are the five to grab. Read on for the exact formations, plays, and reads for each one.
Why is Oregon State the best offensive playbook in College Football 27?
Oregon State is one of the most dynamic, explosive, and fun offenses in the whole game. It starts with the Pistol.
Pistol Formations (Wing Flex Close and Bunch Tight End)
Your two starting formations:
- Pistol Wing Flex Close
- Pistol Bunch Tight End
Run plays:
- Halfback Zone Weak (Pistol Wing Flex Close)
- Halfback Zone (Pistol Bunch)
For both — use the RIGHT STICK to flip the run toward the trip side or bunch side. You can also HOLD LEFT TRIGGER to run it to the left.
Halfback zones from Pistol have been good since day one. If you're not using them, you are making a mistake. You have to find them. You have to use them. Especially from any heavier or compressed set.
How do people stop it? They get their safeties involved. Which means their pass defense isn't as good. That's a win for you.
Pass play — Cross Drag (Pistol Bunch Head). No hot routes needed. Reads:
- Double drag
- The crosser
- In route — final read
Shotgun plays from Oregon State
Bunch Quads Offset — an overloaded formation that can get your opponent off. Two good runs:
- Inside Zone
- Duo
Gun Trips Tight End — Drive Post. Hot route: swing the halfback out. Reads:
- Check the halfback flat. If it's there, hit it, get up field, take the cheap yardage
- Work eyes inside to the drag route
- Post route going over the top
Call this one a lot. A lot of people will struggle to stop it.
RPO Read Y Flat — this is a run play AND an RPO. A lot going on:
- You have a read option. Keep it and run it as a true read option
- Right side: tight end leaks into a flat route. Quick throw, sometimes a big gain, sometimes a small annoying gain
- Left side: the bubble, flat-routed (better than a bubble), your stereotypical bubble screen
Against straight man cover, you'll probably pull the ball instead of throwing. It's a tougher read. QB Zone is pretty cool here too.
Bunch Strong Offset — Dagger. Hot routes: streak the halfback, post the tight end. Gets the halfback up the seam. This formation is good every single year.
Short yardage and Bunch X Nasty
Both Pistol formations have a Speed Option. Don't run these as a true speed option. The goal is to cut them up the field. Push the LEFT STICK UP — a lot of times you'll find a few yards up the middle.
Bunch X Nasty is the best style of passing from Oregon State. One of the most popular formations in the game. One play from that scheme: Drive Halfback Under (Coach's Favorites). Phenomenal play. Jobi hits it for a poster-up, potential one-play touchdown.
This is one free tip on the Oregon State offense. Members get the full Oregon State scheme — broken down by Ginobi (Jobi), one of the best CFB 27 players in the world — with way more plays from Bunch X Nasty, updated weekly. → civil.gg/become-a-member
Which playbook lets you win without hot routes? (Fresno State)
Fresno State Gun Tight Doubles. You can call plays without a single hot route. That's what makes it special. Great for dynasty players — or anyone who doesn't want to make a bunch of hot routes every play. Snap the ball and get after it.
Fresno State key formations
- Gun Tight Doubles — the main event. If you're not using Tight Doubles, you're not using this playbook. Simple as that.
- Pistol Bunch Head End — Speed Option (short yardage), Halfback Zone Verticals, Play Cross Drag (solid snap-and-go)
- Under Center Wing Tight / Wing Flex Close — pound the rock, get heavy
- Gun Spread Y Flex
- Gun Trio Offset Weak
Gun Tight Doubles top plays
- Cross Wheels — probably the best Heisman CPU play in the book. Snap and go, especially against users who don't adjust. On fourth and 10: streak the slot opposite the halfback up the seam
- Cross Halfback Sneak — just call it, snap the ball, easy gains
- Inside Zone — solid run option
- Flood Curl — good pass play, no hot routes needed. Make hot routes and it gets even better
- Blood Slot Return — snap the ball, check the seam
- B Low Crosser — go up tempo if you want
- Angle Screen — great for short yardage and a nice red zone option
Gun Trio Offset Weak and Gun Spread Y Flex
Gun Trio Offset Weak isn't the favorite here, but it's legit. Middle Slants is a solid base play. One hot route: in-route the outside left wide receiver. The quick drag opens up underneath.
Gun Spread Y Flex — Motion Halfback Bubble. Not something you can spam. Go to it a few times a game. Gets consistent yardage. There are counters, but it's a nice weapon.
Bottom line: This playbook lets you snap the ball and win. Especially against Heisman CPU and online users who don't adjust. Tight Doubles carries it. Everything else is solid. But Tight Doubles is nasty.
What is the Florida swing series everyone's running? (Florida playbook)
Florida has recently taken the Twitter sphere by storm. My friend VA Dime brought this one up first — been in the community a long time, always running annoying stuff.
Pistol Trips Wide Over
Cool overloaded formation right out of the gate. Runs available:
- Halfback Zone Weak
- Wide Zone
- Shift plays
- Halfback Zone
The halfback zones from here are always just good. When you get a good run play out of an overloaded formation, you add a lot of stress to defenses. I love stressing a defense.
Shotgun — where the money's made
Empty Ace — a cool formation. Not as good here as in Madden, and they kept some plays from us. Still worth it:
- Stick
- Curl Flats
- Quick speed flats — nice quick dump offs
- Routes over the middle
Empty Woff Trips / Empty Trips Off — they sound like the same formation. They're not. Check the little alignment differences. Both are full of quarterback run plays.
Bunch Tight End — the swing series
This is the bread and butter. It's the little swing series.
Motion Halfback Swing — pure swing screen. The halfback gets out really fast. Because there's compression, the defense gets outflanked incredibly easy. Not impossible to defend, but when they do defend it, they tip their hand a lot. Man coverage gets caught up = huge gain to the outside.
The counter — Motion Spacing. Don't like Motion Jailbreak Screen. Motion Spacing is the counter. They added a short post route (a route we'd kill for in this play) and it does a good job against man AND zone.
The idea: show swing screen, then build route combos around it. Stuff you can layer on:
- Blood concept to the left
- Seam route — Zigg open in the seam
- Corner route above a hard fly defender — touchdown
The swing could still be open too. You're not doing anything complicated. You're taking a good concept and building on it.
Also worth revisiting: Pistol Trips Wide Over — unique formation with a really good run play. Audible into Bunch Tight End from there. You can imagine how annoying that would be.
Bottom line: This playbook is taking the world by storm. It's the Gun Bunch Tight End and that little swing series.
Is California a good all-around playbook in CFB 27?
Yes. Cal isn't just a five-wide playbook. It's an all-around really good playbook. This was one of my favorite day-one playbooks in Couch Ball.
Gun Five Wide Receiver Tight — Clear Deep
Lots of great plays here, like Mesh Post. But the big hitter is Clear Deep. Flip the play so your bunch is to the right, or to the wide side of the field.
Main reads:
- Corner route on the outside bunch wide receiver (outside trips guy, left side)
- Right side: slot fade B — or drag him as a checkdown, your call
Be honest with yourself: this is a tougher ball to throw. It's not always super open. Tight squeeze at times. Bombing is probably harder this year than any other. But if there's one play to bomb with, it's Clear Deep out of Five Wide Receiver Tight.
Gun Five Wide Receiver Tight — Mesh Post
Easy play. Snap it and work your reads:
- Double drags — check these immediately. Great vs man. Defenders bump each other. Develops fast.
- Post route — getting open over top
One rule no matter what you call: your offensive line needs to at least PRETEND to block. If they don't block, you're done no matter what you call.
The Y route can be open too — but a bad read here will get you an interception. You need to be a more experienced passer to make that read consistently.
California red zone and short yardage — Gun Trips X Nasty
- Motion screen is good — just not as good as the Gun Bunch Tight End one. You don't get the same leverage without a compressed set
- The motion hback swing isn't bad, just not as good. It's all based around leverage
Stick Motion / Stick Wheel:
- Zig the RB
- Streak by inside
- X on an in route
Works against man, zone, and match. First reads: check the swing and the zig route inside. See what's there, then work from it. You've also got verticals (pretty legit) and different motion plays here.
Other California formations worth knowing
- Trips Tight End — really good. Drive Post is solid
- Cluster Halfback Strong — you could run only this and do a lot of damage. Motion Mesh Post: streak the tight end, then hit the guy underneath with a nice pass lead — possession catch, touchdown
- Bunch Nasty — Double Pass — tougher to throw, lots of picks, but can hit for big plays. Nice bomb if you want it. Natural motion gives an okay swing, and the stock play is legit vs man
- Bunch Strong Nasty — great formation. RPO Read Bubble (really good) and Dagger Wide Trail
- Bunch Tight End / Cluster Trips Tight End — Motion Z Spot: zig the inside-most receiver, stem the tight end down. Backside post opens over the middle for a bigger gain
- Empty Quads — QB Blast + RPO Alert QB Draw. Check the blocking first (LEFT TRIGGER), then hit it. Both are pretty good
- Others: Strong Bunch, Bunch Y Flex, Y Trips, Y Off, Trio Close, Normal Y Off Close, Gun Tight Open, Tight Doubles (not as good as Fresno's, but has Cross Wheels), Single Back (no pistol)
The one thing that'll mess you up: Cal has so many good formations. The trap is bouncing around and never mastering anything. Doesn't matter how good your stuff is. Master something. And never be afraid to step up in the pocket — easy yardage, no matter what playbook you're in.
Why is Wyoming still a top playbook 75 days into CFB 27?
75 days into the game's life, Wyoming is still one of the best playbooks in College Football 27.
Pistol runs with a fullback
Wyoming does something most playbooks don't — Pistol runs with a fullback. Shown to me by Civil GG coach J. Razm, and it does a surprisingly good job.
Formation: Pistol Strong. Play: Halfback Stretch.
The fullback adds an element to Pistol running that defenders have to account for — something you don't see with the halfback zones.
- Creates one-on-one opportunities in the run game
- Still pairs well with your standard halfback dives and halfback zones
Note: if your tight end gets tossed because you're playing the number one team (the Texas Longhorns / "Hookham Horns"), it's going to be a long day. But if you can hold your ground at all, this creates opportunities. Similar look: Pistol Bunch — Halfback Zone.
Gun Ace Slot
Gun Ace Slot has a special place in my heart. It's the formation I used to break into the competitive scene in Madden 20 — winning games, making deep tournament runs. Whenever it shows up, it's almost always solid.
Easy route combo (shown from "X post" / "Xpot"):
- Slant the slot receiver
- In route the outside wide receiver
- Swing the halfback
To beat man: you need players who can actually win man, especially your tight ends. Two tight end sets live and die by tight ends who can beat man. Also from here — wheel route to the left side to attack over the top (great stepping up against a three-man rush).
Y Off Trips Nasty — RPO Read Y Flat
This is really the key one from Wyoming. RPO Read Y Flat has been good for years and still is.
- Read option first and foremost. Keep it and take off if you want
- Flat throw available as another option
- Great for short yardage situations
Trips Tight End and Bunch Tight End Weak
Trips Tight End:
- Comeback Wide Angle Post — just snap the ball
- RPO Read Y Flat — same concept as above, snap and go
- Salem Y Wheel — really good, snap-and-go type play
Bunch Tight End Weak — Halfback Dive. Bunch Tight End puts the halfback right, Weak flips him left. Really good run call, gets downhill well.
Cool motion trick: motion out the halfback. It creates a quads look. From there run mesh underneath and take off if the defense doesn't adjust.
Flood concept off the motion:
- Motion the halfback out wide on a flat route
- Quick read the flat first
- If it's not there, the corner route is open over the top
- Easy possession catch on the sideline
Mix it up — same motion, but attack the middle. Quick drag, tight end crossing, defenders have to choose.
Gun Bunch Strong Nasty and the short yardage answer
Gun Bunch Strong Nasty is always a good formation. Seen in multiple playbooks. Has a nice cheat motion built in.
- Bunch Nasty PA Cheat Vertical Y Slide — a lot of cool things off it
- RPO Read Zone Bubble — cool option too
Short yardage answer: when you need to convert, come back to Y Off Trips Nasty — RPO Read Y Flat. Great blocking. Easy conversion. Works even against a team way better than yours.
What should you do next?
Those are the best offensive playbooks in College Football 27 in my opinion — Oregon State, Fresno State, Florida, California, and Wyoming. Pick one. Master it. Don't bounce around.
