RPO Slide Routes

CFB 26OffensePassingRed Zone

Quick Recap:

RPO slide routes destroy red zone defenses by motioning the tight end from RPO Read Y Flat to the opposite flat for clean spacing and catch animations. Read the R icon defender — if he crashes down, keep it with the QB; if he sits or comes up, dump to the motioned tight end in the flat. Works with Stanford's RPO Read Flat Wheel from Gun Deuce Close using the same motion concept.

How to Score Easy Red Zone Touchdowns with RPO Slide Routes

RPO slide routes are your SECRET WEAPON for stealing red zone touchdowns. Simple concept — motion a tight end's slide route to create an instant numbers advantage.

Here's the setup: Find RPO Read Y Flat in your playbook. The tight end slides across the ENTIRE formation. Don't just dump it there — that's amateur hour. Instead, motion him to the opposite flat for a cleaner look.

Why this destroys defenses: You get a built-in read option with the slide. Hand off based on what the R icon defender does OR keep it with your QB. Plus the motioned route creates better spacing and catch animations.

Works in multiple playbooks. Stanford has RPO Read Flat Wheel from Gun Deuce Close. Same concept — motion the crossing route directly to the flat for easy completions.

What Makes RPO Slide Routes So Deadly

The power is in the MOTION. When you call RPO Read Y Flat straight up, your tight end slides across the formation. Nothing wrong with this — but it's not optimal.

The crossing route can get messy animations. Defenders have time to react. The catch point isn't always clean.

But when you motion that slide route to the flat? Game over.

Now you've got a guy sitting in perfect position. Clean catch animations. Defender has to choose — cover the flat or stay home for the run. Can't do both.

The read becomes STUPID simple:

  • R icon crashes down? Keep it with the QB
  • R icon sits or comes up? Dump to the flat
  • Perfect spacing every time

How to Set Up RPO Slide Routes Step-by-Step

Step 1: Find the Right Play

Go to play call screen. Navigate to Concepts. Find Options. Look for RPO reads with slide routes.

Step 2: Call RPO Read Y Flat

This is your base play. Tight end slides across formation. You CAN dump it here — but we're not done yet.

Step 3: Motion the Slide

  • Select the sliding player (circle button)
  • Hold it down
  • Use D-pad to select him
  • Use D-pad to motion to OPPOSITE side of formation

Step 4: Read the Defense

Watch the R icon defender. He tells you everything:

  • Crashes inside = keep with QB
  • Sits outside = hit the flat

When to Use RPO Slide Routes

RED ZONE SITUATIONS — This is where slide routes SHINE. Compressed field means less space for defenders to cover. Your motioned route creates instant separation.

Short yardage — Need 3-5 yards? Motion that slide to the flat. Easy completion or QB keeper for the first down.

Against aggressive defenses — Teams bringing heat? The slide route gives you a quick outlet while the run option keeps defenders honest.

When you see single-high safety — Defense is vulnerable to horizontal concepts. Slide routes attack that weakness perfectly.

What Playbooks Have RPO Slide Routes

Stanford Playbook — Go to Options, find RPO Read, select RPO Read Flat Wheel from Gun Deuce Close. Same concept with the motioning.

Multiple playbooks have this concept. Look in the Options section under RPO reads. The key is finding plays with slide routes that you can motion.

Don't get locked into one formation. This works from:

  • Gun formations
  • Deuce close sets
  • Any formation with a tight end

Why RPO Slide Routes Beat Zone Coverage

Zone defenders have AREAS to cover. When you motion that slide route, you're putting a receiver right in the seam between zones.

The flat defender has to choose — cover the route or respect the run fake. Can't do both effectively.

Meanwhile, your QB read is simple. One defender tells you where to go with the ball. No complex progressions. No guessing.

This creates a numbers advantage — you're putting that defender in a bind he can't win.

Common Mistakes with RPO Slide Routes

Not motioning the route — The base play works, but motioning creates better spacing and animations.

Forcing the pass — If the read says keep it, KEEP IT. Don't get locked into throwing every time.

Wrong timing — Make your read PRE-SNAP. Identify the R icon defender before the ball is snapped.

Overthinking it — This isn't complicated. One defender, two options. Simple.

RPO slide routes give you EASY touchdowns when you need them most. Motion creates separation. Built-in read option keeps defenses honest. Perfect for red zone scoring.
