Make Offenses Work

CFB 26defensegeneral

TL;DR

Stop giving up one-play touchdowns by running Cover 3 Cloud shaded underneath as your base defense. Force opponents to string together multiple 10-yard completions instead of hitting deep sidelines for easy scores. Avoid Cover 2 variations and basic Cover 3 blitzes that leave massive holes.

How to Make Offenses Work in College Football 26

You're giving up too many one-play touchdowns. Stop it.

The secret isn't fancy plays or complex schemes. It's making your opponent work for every yard. Force them to call more plays. More plays = more chances for mistakes. More mistakes = more interceptions for you.

The problem: You're calling coverages that leave massive holes. Cover 2 shaded underneath? Those deep sidelines are WIDE OPEN. Someone attacks there and it's a touchdown. Game over.

The solution: Cover 3 Cloud, shade underneath. That's it. Kenny went 21-3 running mostly this coverage. Not complicated — just effective.

Here's what making offenses work actually looks like:

  • No one-play touchdowns allowed
  • Force attacks in the 10-yard range
  • Make them string together multiple completions
  • Stay active with your user to take away their first read

When they can't get easy chunks, they get frustrated. Frustrated players make bad throws. Bad throws become picks.

What Coverage Should You Actually Run

Cover 3 Cloud is your base.

Shade your coverage underneath. You've got three deep defenders protecting against the big play. Your underneath coverage takes away the quick stuff. Your user can roam and create chaos.

This coverage works because:

  • You know exactly what it's doing
  • You know where to position your user
  • It doesn't naturally give up massive plays

Build your entire defensive scheme around this. Make adjustments from here, but this is home base.

What Coverages to Avoid

These "popular" defenses will get you cooked:

Basic Cover 3 blitzes — Usually trash unless you're making specific adjustments. The blitz leaves holes.

Cover 2 Trap — Sounds cool. Doesn't work. Deep sidelines are vulnerable.

Nickel Sim 2 — It's just Cover 2 blitz with extra steps. Same problems.

Cover 2 Invert — Another coverage that looks fancy but gives up big plays.

Any Cover 1 — Man coverage gets beaten too easily in CFB 26. Stick to zone.

Cover 0 — Only works if you're elite or playing scrubs. Everyone else will torch you.

Stop calling these. Seriously. You're making the game harder than it needs to be.

How to Force 10-Yard Attacks

Your goal: make them work in short areas instead of bombing you deep.

Step 1: Call Cover 3 Cloud, shade underneath

Step 2: User a linebacker or safety in the middle of the field

Step 3: Take away their first read with your user

Step 4: Let your coverage do the rest

When they can't hit their primary target, they have to find something else. That takes time. Time means pressure. Pressure means bad decisions.

Your coverage is designed to give up 5-8 yard completions while preventing anything explosive. Let them have the short stuff — just make sure you tackle.

When to Switch Your Coverage

Cover 3 Cloud isn't perfect. Sometimes you need to adjust.

If they're hitting quick slants repeatedly: Shade your coverage more aggressively underneath or switch to a different zone coverage.

If they find holes in your deep coverage: Check your user positioning. You might be leaving someone uncovered.

If they're running effectively: Don't panic and call a run blitz. Stick with your coverage and make better tackles.

The key is making small adjustments, not completely changing your approach. Your base coverage should handle 80% of situations.

Common Mistakes That Kill This Strategy

Getting impatient: They complete a few 6-yard passes and you panic. Don't. That's exactly what you want. Make them string together 12 completions for a touchdown.

Poor user positioning: Your coverage works, but you're not taking away anything with your user. Be active. Disrupt their timing.

Calling blitzes: You think you need more pressure. You don't. You need better coverage. Blitzes create holes.

Switching coverages too much: Pick Cover 3 Cloud and master it. Don't jump around between 10 different calls.

Bad tackling: Your coverage forces a 7-yard completion, then you whiff the tackle and it becomes 20 yards. Fundamentals matter.

Make them work. Force mistakes. Get picks. Win games. It's that simple.
