Pass Protection Basics

Madden 27OffensePassingPlaybook Tips

Quick Recap:

Find the flame icon pre-snap (Right Trigger + Right Stick Up). That defender comes free if he blitzes. Slide your line with the Right Stick to shift the hot man away from the biggest threat. If you need full control, use On-Target to manually pick who stays unblocked.

Pass Protection in Madden 27. What You Actually Need to Know

Your line can't block everybody. That's not a bug. That's football. The game picks someone to leave hot. Meaning unblocked if they blitz. Your job pre-snap is to find that guy and decide if you're okay with it. If you're not, fix it before you snap.

That's the whole thing. Everything below is just the details.

What Is the Flame Icon?

Before the snap, pull up your play art: Right Trigger + Up on the Right Stick.

You'll see a flame icon on one of the defenders. That's your hot man. Your offensive line has already decided. If he blitzes, he comes free. No one is picking him up.

Wait until everyone lines up and sets before you look. Things shift at the line and the icon can move. Let them settle first. Then check.

If that guy blitzes and you haven't done anything about it - he's coming. Every time. Not a glitch. You just didn't look.

How Do You Slide the Offensive Line?

Once you see who's hot, ask yourself one question: Am I okay with this guy being free?

If the answer is no. Slide the line. Use the Right Stick:

  • Flick Right, slide the line right, moves the hot icon
  • Double-click Right, full slide right
  • Flick Left, slide the line left
  • Double-click Left, full slide left

Sliding shifts who's hot. The guy that was going to come free now gets blocked. Someone else becomes hot instead.

This is where most people stop. But there's a second option that goes further.

How Do You Move the Flame Icon Manually?

This is called On-Target. It lets you pick exactly who the hot man is.

  1. Flick Up on the Right Stick to activate On-Target
  2. Move the flame icon manually to a specific defender
  3. Put it on the USER if you think they're faking a blitz

Here's why this matters. A lot of players will hover near the line or get low with their user defender to mess with you. They want you to panic and adjust. On-Target lets you put the hot icon on that user specifically. Now your line handles everyone else. If the user actually blitzes, he comes free, but you knew that. If he doesn't, your line takes care of the rest.

Most blitzes since this feature came out don't ignore it. It's right the majority of the time.

What Happens When You Slide All the Way?

There is ALWAYS going to be someone hot. Always. You can't make it zero.

If you full slide right. The flame icon moves to the left side. Now if a defender blitzes from the left, he's coming free. That's how it's supposed to work. You didn't break anything. You just traded one problem for a different one.

So the real process looks like this:

  1. Un-target the user first. Make HIM the hot man
  2. Look around the rest of the defense
  3. Shift until you find a combo you're okay with
  4. Ask. If THIS guy is unblocked, am I okay with it?

General rule: The further back or further outside a defender is, the more okay you are with him being hot. A slot corner blitzing from 8 yards out takes time to get to you. That time is your read. You can still get the ball out.

What Are the Most Common Mistakes?

Never looking pre-snap. This is the big one. Players snap the ball, get crushed, and blame the defense. Look before you snap. Every time. Make it a habit until it's automatic.

Panicking when the user fakes. Somebody will hover at the line and never actually come. You make a bunch of adjustments, snap the ball confused, and throw a bad pass. Use On-Target. Put the flame on the user. Now you have a plan either way.

Sliding and forgetting the other side. Full slide right means the left is now hot. People forget to check where the new flame landed. Look again after you adjust.

Trying to block everyone. You can't. Stop trying. The goal is to find a situation you can live with. Not to eliminate all pressure. Manage WHO is hot, not whether someone is hot.

When Should You Use Each Option?

Slide the line. When the hot defender is in a bad spot. Right in the A-gap. Coming off the edge with a speed rusher. Someone you can't live with being free.

On-Target. When the user is faking. When someone is hovering. When you want precise control over where the flame goes instead of just moving it one direction and hoping.

Leave it alone, when you look at who's hot and you're genuinely fine with it. Far-out corner. Linebacker in coverage. Deep safety. Don't over-adjust just to feel like you did something. If you're okay with the situation, snap it and play.

The Short Version

Pull up the play art. Find the flame. Ask if you're okay with that guy coming free. If yes - snap it. If no, slide the line or use On-Target to move the flame somewhere you can live with. Then snap it.

That's pass pro. Do it every single play until it's automatic. It's not complicated. Most people just never look.
