What is the Hesi Move
The hesi move is a simple ball carrier technique that messes up defender pursuit angles. Works for running backs AND receivers after the catch.
The execution: Hold turbo and left stick — then completely let go of BOTH for a split second — then immediately back to turbo.
It's literally like a hesitation move in basketball. Your point guard does a hesi — same concept here.
What happens: AI defenders attack your inside shoulder. The hesi gets you outside their pursuit. They just have bad angles after you do it.
User defenders miss too if they're pursuing too hard. The timing throws them off.
How to Execute the Hesi Move
Step 1: The Setup
- Hold Right Trigger (Xbox) or R2 (PlayStation) for turbo
- Push left stick in whatever direction you're running
- Get a feel for your normal running rhythm first
Step 2: The Hesi
- Let up on BOTH the stick AND trigger completely
- Don't hold anything for like half a second
- Your player does a little hesitation — that's the move
Step 3: Back to Speed
- Immediately go back to turbo and stick direction
- Hit the gap that opens up
The rhythm: Hesi bang. Hesi bang.
Sometimes it's not a full stop. Sometimes you're just slowing down slightly. The key is completely letting go of both inputs.
When to Use the Hesi Move
Best Situations:
- When you need blocks to set up in front of you
- AI defenders are pursuing hard to your inside shoulder
- User defender is coming in hot trying to make a tackle
- You have space but need to create a better angle
Player Types:
More agile halfbacks = better hesi moves. Speed guys can do it but agility makes the move sharper.
Don't Use When:
- You have a clear path — sometimes just go
- Multiple defenders are converging quickly
- You're in traffic with no space to work
Read the situation. The hesi isn't always the answer but when it works — huge difference maker.
Why the Hesi Move Works
AI Defender Behavior:
AI defenders are inside hip oriented. They attack your inside shoulder constantly. The hesi gets you outside that pursuit angle.
Once they commit to that inside angle and you hesi — they can't recover. Bad pursuit angles every time.
Block Setup:
Your blockers are working to create running lanes. The hesi gives them an extra beat to establish position.
Instead of hitting the hole immediately — you pause — blocks develop — then you hit it with better positioning.
User Defenders:
Most users pursue aggressively. They're coming downhill trying to make the tackle.
The hesi breaks their timing. They expect you to keep running full speed. When you don't — they whiff.
Common Mistakes with the Hesi
Only Letting Go of One Input
You HAVE to let go of both the stick and trigger. Just letting go of one doesn't create the hesitation.
Holding the Hesi Too Long
It's a quick hesitation — not a full stop. Half a second max. Any longer and defenders catch up.
Using It Every Play
Don't spam it. Mix up your running. Sometimes just hit the hole hard without any moves.
Wrong Timing
The hesi works best when defenders are actively pursuing. If they're not committed to an angle yet — just run normal.
What Counters the Hesi Move
Disciplined User Defense:
Good users don't over-pursue. They stay patient and react to what you do instead of guessing.
Multiple Defenders:
The hesi works against single defenders or when you have space. Multiple guys converging — no amount of hesitation helps.
Inside Leverage:
If the defender has inside leverage and forces you outside into more defenders — the hesi just delays the inevitable.
Counter Strategy:
As a defender — don't over-pursue. Stay patient. Let the offensive player make the first move then react.
Take good angles instead of just running straight at the ball carrier.
