Throwing Ball Away Strategy

CFB 26offensepassing

TL;DR

Right stick in to throw the ball away when nothing's open after your progression, when you see one-on-one coverage downfield, or when you're panicking in the pocket. Don't force throws into tight windows or 50/50 situations — protecting the football matters more than your completion percentage. Works while scrambling too, so throw it away and live to see another down instead of taking sacks or throwing picks.

How to Throw Ball Away in College Football 26

Right stick in. That's it.

Nothing open downfield? Don't force it. Click the right stick and throw the ball away. You don't have to make a read every single play — sometimes the defense just calls a good play and wins.

This is the most underused strategy in College Football 26. Players think they have to complete every pass or they're failing. Wrong. The worst trait of a QB is turning the ball over. Protecting the football is more important than your completion percentage.

Here's the truth: A one-on-one shot between your receiver and their DB is NOT a good throw. I don't care if you caught it last time — that's a bad habit coming back to bite you. You're asking for picks.

The defense has a game plan. They have a strategy. They're going to win some plays. That's football, baby. Might not even be your fault. Be willing to throw it away.

When to Throw Ball Away

Three situations where you MUST throw it away:

  • Nothing open after your progression — You read quick route, intermediate route, checkdown. All covered. Right stick in.
  • One-on-one coverage downfield — Your receiver vs their DB with no help. That's not open. That's 50/50 at best.
  • You're panicking — Pocket breaks down, you're scrambling, can't find anyone. Throw it away.

Don't wait until you're about to get sacked. Don't try to thread impossible windows. Don't stare down receivers hoping they'll magically get open.

Even on the Run

Scrambling outside the pocket? Same rules apply. You can throw it away while rolling out. You can throw it away while running around. Right stick in works anywhere.

Most players think once they start scrambling they HAVE to find someone or take the sack. Nope. Throw it away and live to see another down.

Why Throwing Ball Away Works

Simple math. Incompletion is better than interception. Second and 10 is better than giving them the ball at midfield.

Turnovers kill drives. You can overcome incomplete passes. You can't overcome giving the defense free possessions in good field position.

Good defenses WANT you to force throws. They're baiting you into bad decisions. Mid blitz cover zero? They're sending everyone and leaving receivers in single coverage. They want you to panic and throw picks.

When you throw it away consistently, defenses can't rely on getting free turnovers. Forces them to actually stop your offense instead of waiting for mistakes.

How to Execute Throwaway

Controls: Right stick in (click the right analog stick)

Works from any formation. Works with any QB. Works whether you're in the pocket or scrambling.

  1. Snap the ball
  2. Go through your progression — quick routes first
  3. Nothing there? Check your intermediate routes
  4. Still nothing? Don't force it
  5. Right stick in — throw it away

Timing matters. Don't wait until the last second. If your first two reads are covered and pressure is coming, get rid of it. Better to throw it away on time than under pressure.

From the Pocket

Step up if you can, then throw it away. Don't drift backwards into pressure. Stay composed, right stick in, move on to next down.

While Scrambling

Rolling left or right? Same button. Running straight back? Same button. The throwaway works everywhere. Don't try to be a hero.

What Beats Throwaway Strategy

Nothing "beats" throwing it away — that's the point. But here's what you need to watch for:

Intentional grounding. Make sure you're throwing it where an eligible receiver could theoretically catch it. Can't just chunk it into the ground with no one around.

Getting stuck in third and long. If you're throwing it away too much on first and second down, you'll face a lot of third and 10+. Mix in some checkdowns and safe completions.

The counter isn't defensive — it's about your own patience. Don't throw away passes when you have legitimate checkdown options available.

Common Mistakes with Ball Security

Mistake #1: Thinking every play needs a completion. Wrong mindset. Some plays the defense just wins.

Mistake #2: Forcing throws into single coverage because "my guy is good." Doesn't matter how good your receiver is — contested catches are coin flips.

Mistake #3: Waiting too long to throw it away. Once you decide nothing's there, get rid of it immediately.

Mistake #4: Only using it when you're about to get sacked. Throw it away because coverage is good, not just because of pressure.

Mistake #5: Never taking checkdowns. There's a difference between "nothing open" and "nothing open downfield." Take the underneath stuff when it's there.

Remember — protecting the football is the most important thing you do as a QB. Right stick in. Live to fight another down.
