Pre-Play Blocking

CFB 26OffenseGeneral

Quick Recap:

When you see flame icons above defenders, that's an unblocked rusher coming free to sack you. Set Auto Base Protection to Empty at game start, then use half slide protection toward the blitz side to pick up those flame icon rushers. Check for flames before every snap and slide your line away from the safe edge.

How to Read Flame Icons and Set Pre-Play Protection

You're getting sacked and don't know why. There's a flame icon above that outside linebacker — and he's coming free every single time.

That flame icon means unblocked rusher. Your line isn't picking him up. Most players miss this completely, get screamed at off the edge, then wonder what happened.

Here's the fix: Check for flame icons before every snap. Set your protection accordingly. Stop getting sacked on plays that should work.

Base Setup — Do This First:

  • Click right stick at start of every game
  • Go to Auto Base Protection
  • Select Empty

Empty protection handles stunts better than Base. But — and this is key — Empty doesn't block every blitz. You can still get beat off the edge if you don't read the flames.

When to Check Your Protection

Every single snap. No exceptions.

Pull up play art before you snap the ball. Look for flame icons above defenders. That's your unblocked rusher coming free.

Ask yourself: Am I cool with that guy coming free? Can I get the ball out quick enough? Or do I need to slide protection?

If you see flames and you're running a longer developing route — you better adjust. Otherwise you're eating turf.

How to Set Half Slide Protection

Step 1: Read the Rush
Look at your edges. Which side has the flame icon? Which side looks like more guys are coming?

Step 2: Slide Away From Safe Side
If you know the left edge isn't blitzing — slide right. Give your line extra help where the heat's coming from.

Step 3: Execute the Slide

  • Press Left Bumper
  • Go into blocking protection
  • Half slide toward the blitz side
  • Watch that flame icon disappear

Perfect example: Empty formation, flame icon on right side linebacker. Half slide right — now there's no flame icon. Everybody's blocked. Run your route concept normally.

What About Blocking Your Halfback

Simplest option. See a flame icon? Block your halfback.

You lose the checkdown option but you buy time for your routes to develop. Sometimes that's the right call — especially on longer routes or when you need a specific completion.

Trade-off: No safety valve. But you won't get sacked either.

Why Most Players Get This Wrong

They don't check pre-snap. Just call the play and hope for the best. Then wonder why they can't sustain drives.

They think Empty means everything's blocked. Wrong. Empty is your base — but you still need to read and adjust.

They panic when they see pressure. Don't panic. Information wins. Pull up that play art screen, see what's coming, make your adjustment.

The more information you have, the easier everything becomes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Sliding the wrong way: Don't slide toward the safe side. Slide toward where the pressure's coming from. Give your line help where they need it.

Ignoring flame icons in short yardage: Think you can just power through? Nope. That unblocked linebacker will drop you behind the line. Check your protection even on 3rd and 1.

Not adjusting in key moments: Red zone, two-minute drill, 4th down — these aren't the times to guess. Check your flames, set your protection, execute clean.

What Defenses Do to Counter

Good players will show pressure then drop back into coverage. They want you to slide protection unnecessarily — takes away your checkdowns and limits your route options.

Answer: Trust your reads but have quick concepts ready. If they're showing heavy pressure, have your hot routes and quick game ready to go.

They'll also try to overload one side then bring pressure from the other. That's why you check BOTH edges for flame icons — not just the obvious side.

The Bottom Line

No flame icons = clean pocket. Flame icons = somebody's coming free.

Check before every snap. Slide your protection or block your back. Don't just hope your line figures it out.

This one adjustment stops 80% of the sacks that shouldn't happen. Your offense runs smoother. Your drives stay alive. Your controller stays intact.

Information beats guessing every time.
