Man Coverage Checks

CFB 27DefenseCoverage

Quick Recap:

Turn on man coverage checks for stack and bunch in coaching adjustments to fix pick plays in College Football 26. These create combo coverage where defenders swap based on routes. Middle defender locks on, others take first receiver breaking inside/outside. Use left trigger + right stick down to shade underneath against quick drags.

TL;DR. Man Coverage Checks Fix Your Pick Play Problem

Man coverage checks are MASSIVE in College Football 26. For the first time in years, Cover One actually works.

Two settings in coaching adjustments:

  • Man coverage check for stack, combo coverage against stacked receivers
  • Man coverage check for bunch, point combo against bunched receivers

How it works. Middle defender locks on. Other two defenders swap based on routes. One takes first receiver breaking inside. Other takes first breaking outside.

Result? Drags get covered. Pick plays fail. Man coverage becomes viable again.

Setup is dead simple. Go to coaching adjustments in play call screen or main menu. Scroll to man coverage. Turn both on. Done.

Use left trigger + right stick down to shade underneath if you're still getting beat by quick routes. This kills the drag completely.

How to Set Up Man Coverage Checks

Getting these turned on takes 30 seconds. You set it once. You're good for the whole game.

Two ways to access coaching adjustments:

  1. In the play call screen
  2. Main menu before the game starts

Navigate to man coverage section. You'll see two options:

Man coverage check for stack. This handles when receivers line up directly behind each other. Vertical stack formations.

Man coverage check for bunch. This handles when three receivers group tightly together. Trips bunch, compressed sets.

Turn both on. That's it.

The game handles everything else automatically based on what formation the offense shows.

When to Use These Checks

Against pick plays. This is the big one. Bunch formations with crossing routes used to be automatic completions. Not anymore.

Against compressed formations. When the offense tries to create traffic with tight receiver alignments.

In Cover One situations. Finally makes single-high safety coverage viable again.

Red zone defense. Where bunch formations and pick concepts are most dangerous.

Don't use this against spread formations. The checks work specifically against compressed receiver alignments. Against four-wide or trips spread, you're better off with zone coverage or different man adjustments.

Why Man Coverage Checks Work

The concept is brilliant. Instead of three defenders getting picked by crossing routes, one defender stays locked while the other two swap responsibilities.

Traditional man coverage problem. Defender A covers receiver A, defender B covers receiver B. When receiver A runs a drag and receiver B runs a comeback, they cross paths. Defender A gets picked off by receiver B. Easy completion.

Man coverage check solution:

  • Middle defender locks onto his receiver. No switching
  • Outside defenders read the routes and swap based on leverage
  • Defender with inside leverage takes first receiver breaking inside
  • Defender with outside leverage takes first receiver breaking outside

This eliminates the pick because defenders aren't running into each other anymore.

How to Execute Man Coverage Checks

Basic execution:

  1. Call Cover One Robber Press or any man coverage
  2. Make sure coaching adjustments are set
  3. Let the defense work automatically

Advanced execution:

If you're still getting beat by quick slants or drags, add shade underneath:

  • Hold left trigger
  • Push right stick down
  • This shades all defenders underneath the routes

The combination is deadly. Drag routes that used to be automatic become covered. The defender switches to the drag and sits right underneath it.

Cover One Robber becomes incredibly strong because:

  • Outside routes get covered by the switching
  • Inside breaking routes hit the yellow robber zone
  • Deep routes get covered by the single safety

What Counters Man Coverage Checks

Vertical routes. Four verticals or smash concepts can still stress the coverage.

Running plays. Especially to the weak side where you might only have six defenders in the box.

Quick slants to the locked receiver. The middle receiver who doesn't get switched coverage can still get open on quick timing routes.

Motion to create different looks. If the offense motions out of bunch into spread, your coaching adjustments might not trigger.

Fade routes in the red zone. One-on-one matchups outside where the switching doesn't matter.

Adjusting When You Get Beat

If quick routes still work, shade underneath like mentioned above.

If you're getting beat deep, consider Cover Two Man instead of Cover One.

If the running game starts working, bring a safety down or switch to a different front.

Common Mistakes with Man Coverage Checks

Forgetting to set them up. You have to turn these on manually. They're not default settings.

Using against the wrong formations. These work specifically against bunch and stack. Against spread formations, you need different coverage.

Not shading underneath. If you're getting beat by quick routes, you need to add the shade adjustment.

Staying in man too long. Even with these improvements, man coverage isn't perfect. Mix in zones, especially on obvious passing downs.

Wrong personnel. Make sure you have good man coverage corners and linebackers. These adjustments help, but they don't turn bad defenders into good ones.

Why This Changes Everything

For years, drags beat man coverage consistently. Pick plays were automatic. Cover One was basically useless against good players.

Now? Man coverage is viable again.

You can actually call Cover One without getting picked apart. The strategy matters. The coaching adjustments matter. And most importantly. You have real options instead of just calling zone coverage every play.

This isn't just about stopping one route. It's about having legitimate defensive variety that works at high levels.
