Gadget Position Depth Chart

CFB 26OffenseGeneralPlaybook Tips

Quick Recap:

The gadget position is a hidden depth chart slot that lets you put any player into special packages by flicking the right stick to access gadget halfback, gadget tight end, and other formations. Set it up by going to your depth chart, finding GAD/gadget position, and plugging in whoever you want - now that player shows up in gadget packages instead of your normal lineup. This creates mismatches defenses aren't ready for, like putting a fast receiver at halfback or a speedy backup with 98 speed getting carries.

What Is the Gadget Position Depth Chart

The gadget position is a hidden depth chart slot that lets you put any player into special packages across formations. Most players don't know this exists.

Here's how it works — every formation has packages. Flick the right stick left or right to see them. You'll see backup QB, backup halfback, and gadget. That gadget package pulls from your gadget depth chart position.

Go to depth chart. Scroll down to GAD or gadget. Put whoever you want there. Now when you select a gadget package, that player shows up at halfback, tight end, or wherever the package allows.

Example: Put Jeremiah Smith at your gadget position. Select gadget halfback package. Now Smith lines up at halfback instead of your normal running back.

This creates mismatches defenses aren't ready for. Fast receiver at halfback running wheel routes. Speedy fourth-string guy with 98 speed getting carries. Big tight end lined up wide as a receiver.

It's one of those small details most players overlook — but it opens up tons of creative plays.

How to Set Up Your Gadget Position

Setting this up takes 30 seconds:

  1. Go to your team's depth chart
  2. Scroll down until you see GAD or gadget position
  3. Put the player you want to use in gadget situations
  4. Save your depth chart

Now when you're in-game:

  1. Pick any formation
  2. Flick right stick left or right to see packages
  3. Look for gadget packages — gadget halfback, gadget tight end, etc.
  4. Select the package you want
  5. Your gadget player shows up in that position

Pro tip: Not every formation has gadget packages. Some have multiple gadget options. Experiment with different formations to see what's available.

When to Use Gadget Packages

Best situations for gadget plays:

Red zone offense: Put a fast receiver at halfback. Defense expects normal run plays. Hit them with wheel routes or quick slants from the backfield.

Short yardage: Big tight end or linebacker at fullback. Extra blocking power for goal line situations.

Trick plays: Backup QB at wide receiver for reverses and throwback passes. Confuses defensive assignments.

Speed mismatches: That 98-speed receiver who never sees the field? Put him at halfback. Linebackers can't keep up on coverage.

Change of pace: When your offense gets stale, gadget packages give you new looks without changing your entire gameplan.

Don't overuse it. Gadget packages work best as surprises. Use them 3-4 times per game max.

Why Gadget Packages Work

Defenses prepare for your normal personnel. They know your starting halfback's speed, your tight end's route running, your receiver's blocking.

Gadget packages break those expectations:

  • Linebackers used to covering a 85-speed halfback suddenly face a 98-speed receiver
  • Safeties expect certain route concepts from tight end position — not from a wide receiver lined up there
  • Run fits get confused when your "halfback" is actually a receiver who might run a route

The CPU and human players both struggle with unexpected personnel. Their defensive adjustments are based on normal packages. Gadget looks require split-second recognition they often don't have.

Best Players for Gadget Position

Look for specific player types:

Fast receivers with low depth chart position: 95+ speed guys who don't start. Perfect for gadget halfback packages.

Athletic tight ends: Good receiving stats but maybe not your starter. Great for gadget receiver packages.

Backup quarterbacks with mobility: Wildcat formations, trick plays, throwback passes.

Big linebackers or safeties: Short yardage situations where you need extra size and blocking.

Don't waste your star players here. Gadget position is for maximizing underused talent.

Common Mistakes with Gadget Packages

Using it too much: Gadget packages lose effectiveness when defenses expect them. Keep it limited.

Wrong personnel choices: Don't put slow players in speed packages or small players in power packages. Match the player to the package type.

Not checking packages: Some formations have no gadget packages. Some have multiple options. Always flick through before assuming.

Forgetting about blocking: That 170-pound receiver at halfback can't pass block like your normal running back. Plan your protection accordingly.

Overcomplicating it: Start simple. Fast receiver at halfback running basic routes. Build complexity as you get comfortable.

Countering Opponent Gadget Packages

When facing gadget packages:

  • Watch for personnel changes during their play call
  • Adjust coverage based on the actual player, not the position
  • If they put a receiver at halfback, consider pass coverage over run fits
  • Don't panic — treat it like any other mismatch and adjust accordingly

Most players use gadget packages poorly. They'll telegraph it or use it at predictable times. Stay disciplined and make your reads based on what you see, not what the formation normally does.
