How to Run Double Pivot in Gun Five Wide
Double Pivot from Gun Five Wide — ONE HOT ROUTE and you're good to go. Perfect for Dynasty mode when Stadium Pulse is messing with your timing. Cut the field in half, read high-low concepts on each side.
Formation: Gun Five Wide
Play: Double Pivot
Hot Route: Outside left receiver to comeback (L2/Left Trigger)
That's it. One button press and you've got a killer concept that works against any coverage.
Left side gives you high-low with comeback underneath, zig over top. Right side — same deal but with an extra in route breaking over the middle. Pick a side pre-snap, read which space is open, deliver the ball.
Works on Heisman against Alabama. Works in Dynasty when your freshman QB can't handle complex reads. ALL SKILL LEVELS.
Why Double Pivot Destroys Defenses
Five receivers spread across the field — defense can't cover everyone. You're attacking TWO DIFFERENT LEVELS on each side of the formation.
Zone coverage? High-low concepts create natural windows. Safety sits deep to cover the zig route — comeback is wide open underneath. Linebacker drops to take away the comeback — zig route goes right over his head.
Man coverage? Routes break at different times, creating pick opportunities and forcing defenders to fight through traffic.
Stadium Pulse killing your timing? This play doesn't rely on perfect timing windows. Routes develop quick enough that you're not holding the ball forever, but have enough variety that something's always open.
The Field-Splitting Concept
Don't try to read all five receivers — that's how you take sacks. Split the field down the middle:
- Left side: Comeback and zig route
- Right side: Zig, comeback, and in route
Pick ONE SIDE pre-snap. Read high to low or low to high — whatever feels natural. Advanced players can scan both sides, but if you're learning the game, stick to one half.
Step-by-Step Setup and Execution
Pre-Snap Setup
- Call Gun Five Wide — Double Pivot
- Check field alignment — want your trips side (three receivers) on the WIDE SIDE of the field
- If trips are on wrong side, hit Right Trigger to flip the play
- Press Y/Triangle for hot routes
- Select outside left receiver
- Hit L2/Left Trigger for comeback route
- Decide which half you're reading — left or right
Reading Left Side
High route: Zig breaking across the formation
Low route: Comeback sitting in the flat
Look at the space BETWEEN these routes. Deep safety sitting over top? Comeback is there for 6-8 yards. Linebacker or nickel defender sitting underneath? Zig route breaks free over the middle.
Reading Right Side
High route: Zig route
Medium route: In route crossing the formation
Low route: Comeback
More options here. Quick dot to the zig route can turn into big yards with broken tackles. In route finds soft spots in zone coverage. Comeback gives you the safe checkdown.
When to Call Double Pivot
Third and medium (4-8 yards): Multiple routes hit that conversion distance
Dynasty mode with low-rated QB: Simple reads, quick throws
Against zone coverage: High-low concepts create natural windows
Two-minute drill: Routes develop quickly, easy completions to move the chains
Red zone: Spacing gets condensed, but comeback routes still find soft spots
Field Position Matters
Hash marks affect your reads. If you're on the right hash, left side of the field has more space — that comeback route gets more room to work. On the left hash, right side concepts have more breathing room.
What Defenses Do to Stop It
Cover 2 Man: Linebackers and safeties bracket the intermediate routes. Look for the comeback underneath — should be clean.
Cover 3 Match: Middle linebacker can sit in the hole between levels. Check the outside comeback or take the quick zig before the safety can break on it.
Blitz: Hot routes break fast enough to beat most pressure. Get the ball out to your first read — don't wait for perfect windows.
Defensive Adjustments
Smart defensive players will start jumping routes if you keep hitting the same concepts. Mix up your reads — if you hit comeback three times, next time take the zig over top.
Defenses might also start pressing receivers to disrupt timing. Comeback routes still work against press — actually creates MORE separation when the receiver breaks back to the quarterback.
Common Mistakes That Kill This Play
Trying to read all five receivers: You'll take a sack every time. Pick a side, stick with it.
Staring down your first read: If the comeback isn't there, move to the next option. Don't force it.
Wrong field alignment: Trips formation works best on the wide side. Always check and flip if needed.
Holding the ball too long: Routes develop quick — make your decision and deliver. This isn't a deep shot play.
Forgetting the hot route: Play doesn't work without that comeback on the left. Make it automatic — formation, hot route, read.
Master this one concept and you've got an answer for any defensive coverage. Simple setup, multiple options, works at every skill level.
