Defensive Stunts Fix

CFB 26defensegeneral

TL;DR

The defensive stunt menu got fixed — now hold Y/Triangle while selecting your defensive play and use the left stick to pick stunts like Texas Four Man without slow menu navigation. This makes stunts actually usable in online games, giving you better pass rush coordination and run defense options that were previously too clunky to call.

How to Call Defensive Stunts After the Patch

The defensive stunt menu got a MASSIVE fix. Before this patch — calling stunts in online games was basically broken. You'd press left on D-pad, hit right bumper, navigate through menus while your opponent is already snapping the ball. Terrible.

Now it's actually usable. Hold down Y or Triangle when selecting your defensive play — use left stick or D-pad to pick your stunt while still holding the button. Way faster. Way cleaner.

This changes everything for run defense and pass rush. More people will actually USE stunts now because they're not impossible to call. That means more variety in what you'll face — and more tools for YOUR defense.

What Are Defensive Line Stunts

Stunts = coordinated moves between defensive linemen. Instead of rushing straight ahead, they cross paths or loop around each other.

Example: Texas Four Man stunt. Your ends and tackles don't just bull rush — they work together. One guy occupies blockers while another loops into a gap. Creates confusion for the offensive line.

Think of it like basketball picks but for pass rushers. The coordination messes up blocking assignments.

How to Execute the New Stunt Controls

Step-by-step process:

  1. Get to defensive play selection screen
  2. Hold down Y (Xbox) or Triangle (PlayStation) on your chosen play
  3. While STILL HOLDING the button — use left stick or D-pad to navigate stunts
  4. Menu auto-scrolls when you click up/down
  5. Select your stunt (Texas Four Man is solid)
  6. Release Y/Triangle
  7. Opponent picks their play
  8. At the line — stunt is already active

The key is HOLDING the button down. Don't tap and release. Hold it the entire time you're navigating.

When to Use Different Stunts

Against heavy run formations: Texas Four Man works great. Gets penetration up the middle while maintaining gap integrity.

Against pass-heavy opponents: Look for stunts that create clean rushers. The loop concepts work well when offensive lines are expecting straight rushes.

Third and long situations: Perfect time to stunt. Offensive line is thinking pass protection — stunts create confusion in their assignments.

Don't stunt every play. Good offensive players will recognize the pattern and adjust their blocking. Mix it with straight rushes.

Why This Fix Matters

Before the patch — stunts were technically in the game but impossible to use effectively online. The menu system was too slow for competitive play.

Now you can actually incorporate them into your defensive strategy. This creates more realistic football — real defenses use stunts constantly.

Expect to see more variety in what opponents throw at you. Players who never used stunts before will start experimenting. That's good for the game but means you need to understand how to block them.

How to Counter Enemy Stunts

When you see stunts coming at YOUR offense:

Quick game concepts. Slants, hitches, screens. Get the ball out fast before stunts can develop.

Running back checkdowns. Stunts often create holes in underneath coverage as linebackers react to the rush lanes.

Outside zone runs. If they're stunting inside — attack the edges where the defense is flowing away from.

Don't hold the ball waiting for deep routes when you see stunt looks. The confusion they create makes protection unreliable.

Common Stunt Mistakes

Stunting too much. It becomes predictable. Good offensive players will start calling hot routes and quick concepts to neutralize your rush.

Wrong down and distance. Don't stunt on obvious run downs against power formations. You need gap integrity more than pass rush.

Forgetting coverage behind it. Stunts can affect linebacker flow and coverage. Make sure your secondary adjustments still make sense.

Not practicing the new controls. The hold-button method feels different. Work on it in practice mode so you're not fumbling around during games.

Integration with Overall Defense

Stunts work best as part of balanced defensive approach. Combine with the hard flats coverage fix — that combo gives you pass rush AND better underneath coverage.

Against spread formations — use stunts with Nickel 3-3 Over concepts. The extra pass rusher plus stunt coordination can overload protection schemes.

Remember: this fix should carry over to Madden too. Same control scheme, same improved accessibility.
