Blitz Recognition

CFB 26OffensePassing

Quick Recap:

Blitz recognition is your first pre-snap read every play — look for linebackers mugging gaps, safeties creeping down, or bodies crowding the box to identify blitz looks. Against blitz: either ID the mike and block your HB for max protect, or send all 5 receivers and hit quick slants/hitches in 2.5 seconds. No blitz means clean pocket — send everyone out and never waste your HB on blocking.

What Is Blitz Recognition

Blitz recognition is the FIRST thing you need to do every single snap. Before you think about routes, reads, or anything else — you're asking one question: blitz or no blitz?

Most people snap the ball without even thinking about what the defense is showing. Then they wonder why they're getting sacked or throwing picks. The defense is telegraphing their intentions PRE-SNAP — you just need to know what to look for.

Here's how it works:

  • Blitz look — Set up protection OR get ready for hot reads
  • No blitz look — Send everyone out, never block your HB

That's it. One decision changes your entire approach to the play.

How to Read Blitz vs No Blitz

Defensive Formation

Look at WHERE the defenders are lined up:

BLITZ INDICATORS:

  • Linebackers mugging the gaps
  • Safeties creeping down
  • Defenders pressed up on the line
  • "Scary aggressive look" — lots of bodies near the box

NO BLITZ INDICATORS:

  • Linebackers sitting back
  • Safeties deep
  • Clean, spread out look
  • Only 4 obvious pass rushers

Defensive Tendency

Track what they've been doing:

  • Blitzing a lot from certain formations?
  • Showing blitz but dropping into coverage?
  • Only rushing 4 most of the game?

Tendency matters MORE than formation once you get a few drives in.

When You Think BLITZ

You see that scary aggressive look. Linebackers mugging gaps. Here's what you do:

Option 1: Set Up Protection

  • ID the mike linebacker
  • Block your HB
  • Use max protect if needed
  • Accept fewer receivers but more time

Option 2: Hot Route Everything

  • Send all 5 receivers out
  • Hit your quickest developing route
  • Get the ball out FAST — before the blitz gets home
  • Trust your pre-snap read

Both work. Pick based on your comfort level and what routes you have available.

When You Think NO BLITZ

Defense looks calm. Only 4 rushers showing. Clean pocket expected.

NEVER BLOCK YOUR HALFBACK.

This is the biggest mistake people make. You're wasting a perfectly good receiver against a 4-man rush. Your line should handle 4 rushers fine.

Instead:

  • Send your HB on a route
  • Take advantage of 5 receivers vs coverage
  • Work your full progression
  • Use the extra time in the pocket

What If You Guess Wrong

Guessed Blitz, Got Coverage

Not a big deal. You either:

  • Have extra protection — work your limited routes
  • Hit your hot read fast — still works against coverage

You can adjust next time based on tendency.

Guessed No Blitz, Got Blitzed

This is trickier but manageable:

  • Blitzes from "no blitz" looks take longer to develop
  • You have more time than you think
  • Hit your quickest route — usually still there
  • Don't panic and scramble immediately

The key is staying calm. Even when wrong, you're not dead.

Common Blitz Recognition Mistakes

Not Making the Read At All

Biggest mistake. You just snap the ball without thinking. Then you're reactive instead of proactive. Bad things happen when you're always reacting.

Blocking HB Against 4-Man Rush

Huge waste. Your line handles 4 rushers. That HB could be your best route option. Don't give up free receivers.

Panicking on Blitz Looks

Just because they SHOW blitz doesn't mean you're doomed. Make your adjustment and execute. Hot routes beat blitzes every time if you're ready.

Ignoring Tendency

Formation matters early. But after a few drives, tendency is everything. If they keep showing blitz but only rushing 4 — stop blocking extra guys.

Advanced Blitz Recognition Tips

Down and Distance

  • 3rd and long — expect more blitzes
  • 1st and 10 — usually base defense
  • Red zone — blitzes more common

Game Situation

  • Trailing late — defenses get aggressive
  • Leading big — they might sell out to stop run
  • Two-minute drill — expect heat

Formation Adjustments

Change your formation to make blitz recognition easier:

  • Spread formations — easier to see who's coming
  • Bunch formations — harder to read but can create picks
  • Trips formations — force defense to declare coverage

The bottom line — blitz recognition isn't about being perfect. It's about making an educated guess PRE-SNAP and adjusting your game plan accordingly. Do this every play and you'll throw way fewer picks and take way fewer sacks.
